Portland, Ore. Portland Public Schools students' test scores jumped
this year, with more students meeting and exceeding reading and math
benchmarks at every level: third, fifth, eighth and 10th grade. In
almost all the tests, Portland students equaled or outperformed the rest
of the state.

"We have made great strides in the past year," said Superintendent
Vicki Phillips, "thanks to the hard work of our students and the
strong focus of our teachers and other school staff. I am thrilled with
these results, and challenge everyone to keep our shoulders to the
wheel. We want to make sure that every child in every school makes
steady improvement."

For the first time in five years, students scored higher on the state
assessments at every level, with the share of students meeting or
exceeding standards rising by two to five percentage points. In math,
the gains continue Portland Public Schools' steady progress over the
last few years. In reading, performance had occasionally dipped or
stagnated, but this year students posted solid gains at all levels.
Percentage of PPS students meeting or exceeding assessment standards
3rd Grade: Reading 86 percent (up 5%), Math 85 percent (up 3%)
5th Grade: Reading 83 percent (up 5%), Math 86 percent (up 5%)
8th Grade: Reading 66 percent (up 3%), Math 67 percent (up 5%)
10th Grade: Reading 50 percent (up 2%), Math 49 percent (up 3%)
Portland third grade students matched the statewide achievement level
in reading and performed slightly under the state level in math.
Portland students in fifth and eighth grades performed above the state
level in both reading and math. Portland tenth grades performed above
the state in math, but slightly under in reading.
Besides the generally increasing percent of students meeting standards,
particularly noteworthy is the increase in the percent of fifth and
eighth grade students who are exceeding the standards in both reading
and math.

School, District and State results will be posted Friday morning on the
Oregon Department of Educaiton website,
