R1CBU Audio quality

Am I crazy or is the audio quality on the R1CBU firmware far better than stock? I am using an external speaker of it makes a difference. It seems like I can copy stations far lower into the noise floor than in stock firmware.?

I even switched back and forth listening to the same rag chew and heard the same thing.?

Speaker Port

I was just doing some experimenting and discovered that the x6100 speaker port does not work with TS plugs, extremely quiet no matter how I set up the radio. I tried a different speaker with a TRS cable and it works just fine. Plug the TS speaker in part way and it works. Same results with multiple speakers with TS male.

My SSID has an underscore in it, no issue with the X6100 to connect to it.

Is there a "space" character in the name that your WiFi router broadcasts? Mine did and I had to remove it, otherwise the Xiegu firmware would ignore my network. IMO other special characters are also suspect.

Power - Voltage too high ?

Geoff C

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

This may be a trivial question but I have only recently purcahsed the X6100 which I am using with the Pro-Audio Engineering KX33 power supply.

The PSU is rated at 14 volts but the diplay on my X6100 is showing 14.4 volts.

There are dire warnings in the Xiegu manual not to supply more 15 volts and, of course, 14.4 is less than 15.

This still feels a little close to the operational limit.

My questiosn are :-

  • Is anyone else out there using the X6100 / KX33 combo ?
  • Are you seeing 14.4 volts or more on the display (i.e is this normal) ?
  • Should I be concerned about running this close the max ?
  • Anything else on this topic I should be aware of ?

Thanks

Geoff

Real,?
No problem, I found the thermistor on the battery side (see photo).

I measures the voltage of the centre pin (Vout) at ~12oC and it was ~ 0.63V ... The supply to the Vin was 5V. I wamed the thermistor slightly and it changed to 0.67V - so it does work to some amount.

I read that the temperature coefficient of the thermistor is 10mV per oC so, at 12/13oC the coefficient would be 13X0.01V = 0.13. The 0oC Vout is 0.5V ... So... 0.5V + 0.13V = 0.63V ... this indicates to me that the thermistor is probably 100% working correctly.

Tonight I will check more scientifically and study the document of MC9700 and try to work out if the voltage at this temperature is correct or not but from the above it would appear to be fine.?
?
Thank you for this valuable information Real! I had no idea the radio had this.

Re: ALC 100 and NO TX output (AFT5M31N) LDMOS

Hi Real,

I have not measured this thermistor. I did not dismantle the chassis this far yet so I missed it.?

The thermistor looks like its pins go through the PCB to the battery side?

Have you a photo of this side of the PCB showing the whole area? I may be able to measure the thermistor in circuit from the battery side if I can identify the 3 pins?

This is the power of the Internet Real! We help each other!?

Thanks Scot

[Edited Message Follows]

Morning Real,

So once again I was able to observe the radio working as normal, only for it to stop.?

I have performed many measurements on the ATU. I observe each really/LPF activating correctly in respect to the band selector. There is a capacitor next to the power pin for each LPF that is easy to measure the 3.6v signal to the LPF relay.?
In my radio the LPF is selected perfectly.

I measured, inspected and confirmed as best possible that the ribbon cable is in good condition and connects to the main board.

I left the ATU and backup battery disconnected overnight.

This morning, I came to the radio and assembled it. There was NO RF power.

I worked through the bands and confirmed each LPF - all OK
I probed the RF path and noted very low uW power.

I cycled each band and noticed on 40m the RF came back!!! (see oscilloscope)

When I turned the radio over I noticed that on the 40m band I had the ATT enabled (must have been yesterday I set this and forgot)... Remember my radio came back to life when messing with the ATT some days ago?

I ran through every band, full 5W-6W power at the antenna on every band!

I turned off the ATT - I ran through every band, full 5W-6W power at the antenna on every band!

I thought maybe this is it! I fixed it!

No....

After a few cycles and TX on CW into dummy load, the RF power is gone again to zero.?

You can probe RF power on the TX relay at the point in the photo.?

I notice by now there is some warmth in the radio due to being switched on some time in RX mode and many tiny TX in CW...

Maybe a capacitor is intermittent?
Maybe the FINAL is thermally intermittent?
Maybe there is RF pre amplifier (driver) that is failing...

The ATU is ruled out in my opinion
The LPF matrix is ruled out also as it is switching perfectly and RX is noticeably good (the wrong LPF or a disconnect would kill the RX!)?

SO, I am back to Firmware corruption, or finals going on/off due to some strange instability or maybe a bad capacitor.?

I will let the radio cool all day and try again this evening and report to you.?

Thanks
Scot

I add also, that the the radio is not working, I measured the RF voltages on the GATE of the FET at ~ 213mV (0.213V) . The output from the FET was just 13mV (less than the drive to the gate) ...
When it was TX OK, the output from the FET was 6W as in the image

Scot, good match plan.

I read on the forum that unplugging and reconnecting the ribbon cable can solve the problem, on my side it does not work

it is mentioned that the ribbon cables are of very poor quality.

I am sending you a photo that I had taken, you may notice that the contacts are a bit dented.

Real,
My radio shows same problem as yours. I can hear on SDR faint signal also.?

The ATU is a simple affair from looking at the chip (BU2152FS) on board - a simple SIPO serial in parallel out driver chip, looks like the ATU has no "processor or memory" on board. Just control lines from the main board. (I assume controlled from a software file)

The ATU contains the LPF array and a set of ATU relays. The long row of coils and relays are the LOW PASS FILTERS, and the 6 coils near the BNC ANT socket are the ATU.?

The coils in the middle are the SWR bridge coupling I believe, and the few small chips and transistors are control logic and probably signal conditioning to send ALC and SWR/PWR signals back top the main board.

Tonight I am going to put the oscilloscope on the radio as see where the RF signal is being lost in the ATU board.?

**IDEA**

I read that when you disconnected the ATU ribbon cable the RF power and ALC showed around 16Watts? ... I tried, mine said similar (maybe 15 watts) , BUT I think this is a lie and a blessing.

I think it is the radio main board ALC measurement and RF power ADC reading no signal from the ATU which makes a fool of the software and it thinks full power!) The ALC on x6100 was always backwards? 100 off 1=full on. So, lost likely the ALC signal from the ATU bard being missing is causing the reading. The signal must be active low not high.

So in the next 24 hours I hope you offer some results of my signal tracing.

The options are:

1. LPF is not being selected and the signal is dumping before it gets to the SWR / ALC bridge,
2. The RF output is broken (unlikely at this point because a peculiar pressing of ATT and PRE buttons made the power come back and output transistors don't often break "intermittent")
3. The ATU software settings on the main board file system are corrupt and not powering the correct LPF.

I do not think the ATU is the issue... the ATU would just cause HIGH SWR not power loss reading. If you think about it, the ALC gets it signal from the SWR bridge "before the ATU"??

RADIO--->OUTPUT AMP ----->LPF ----->SWR BRDIGE/ALC------->ATU (bridged or active)------->ANT

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?TO ALC/POWER ADC

My money is on a corrupt ATU settings or firmware file or a broken really in the LPF system/tx relay or similar issue.

I read that a factory reset is NOT what you think, it wipes only user preferences! Need to downgrade the baseboard and FW UI to prove the firmware is not the issue!

UPDATE..?
I downgraded fully to FW 1.5 and this did not work. ?If there is a configuration file for the ATU then the FW upgrade/downgrade is NPOT replacing it or that is not the issue.

Thanks

Real Drouin

I tried your find on my side, it gave me no results + my alc is still at 100 and no power on my dummy load, I noticed that there is a small audible transmission with my SDR dungle

Re: ALC 100 and NO TX output (AFT5M31N) LDMOS

Update to the last, this worked several times then the TX power was gone again.?

Time to fault find the ATU.?

Re: ALC 100 and NO TX output (AFT5M31N) LDMOS

Edited

OK... I "THOUGHT" I HAD SOLVED THIS...?

This morning whilst operating CW and after playing with ATT and PRE amp I noticed ZERO - no power from the TX. The audio was fine as usual.

After Real's last message I played with ATT and PRE and the ATTENUATOR appeared flipped... When I enabled the RX attenuator, the TX POWER magically came back!!

Also, I feel it is a BAD IDEA to try and drive the radio 10W with the internal battery!?

Reduce power to 5W when using internal battery and hacked FW. The 10W ?CANOT WORK! its a myth. The power rail cannot support it even if the FW can.

My final was not blown, the ATU/ATTENUATOR and PRE appears messed up.

Thanks
Scot!
