The shutdown during low battery operation when turning on WiFi can be explained by the high pulse current consumption of the WiFi module during transmit - I perused some data sheet and found peak currents up to 370mA at 3.3V - no wonder the radio shuts down with a sudden load increase of 1.2W that may just trip the undervoltage shutdown of the GUI computer. The undervoltage shutdown threshold of the radio part seems to be lower.
