Re: Best Random Wire Length for 75-10 Meters?

I built a small 9:1 balun with an inexpensive toroid and spare wire. I paired it with a 41-foot random wire and 17-foot counterpoise. My x6100 tunes that antenna pretty easily from 10m to 80m and even 160m. I'll probably try it with the next longer wire soon to see the difference in performance.?

Greetings Dennis --

I think the crux of the issue is your desire to avoid a balun.?

As you probably know most folks use a 9:1 balun with a random wire antenna;? I think the prior responses provide adequate data for that.

But since few people do use a balun, getting no-balun info may be a challenge.

You could probably go out and give it a try and have your answer in a couple hours;? string a long wire up in a tree and trim the length until you get to the limits of the tuner.

But I am curious...? why do? you want to avoid the balun?? At the X6100 power levels 9:1 baluns are small, light and affordable, so it seems like the best approach to most operators.? So I'm curious about your situation.
