Jerry, POTA using mobile antennas will work, but as you suspect, not as well as a "real" antenna. Been there, done that. However, I have had success with the ~$100 Pac-12 (not mobile, mind you, but stationary). The car seemed to be a more than adequate ground plane. I hit the ~80%+ ratio of CW contacts per minute, which seems to be the going rate when using a decent antenna.
