Re: Portable vertical antenna suggestions

I like to experiment. Sometimes I use a Sotabeams Bandhopper III (great 3 band step dipole - cut to frequency no need to use a tunner), or a Sotabeams Bandspringer (endfed random long wire - since the X6100 includes an internal tuner this always work fine).
Sometimes I will go for the QRPGuys "Mini 80m-10m No Tune End Fed Half Wave Antenna", or their Portable "No Tune End Fed Half Wave Antenna" too.
Sometimes I go for the Buddipole in all configurations, and sometimes use a small loop 40-10 meter band OM0ET Ultralight Magnetic Loop antenna.
It depends on my mood for field work that day and also the location. If I will be transmitting from inside a Volcanic Lake (Coatepeque Lake), then I will use a Doublet Dipole or a normal Dipole in NVIS configuration (the vertical is of no use here). For this purpose, have built my own versions of a couple of Military Dipoles as used on the PRC-74 (Dipole Doublet) and the AT-35 Dipole antenna (used on the PRC-515/RU-20 Collins Radios).

Soon will be testing a GRA-7350TC vertical. Let's see what happens.Just waiting for it to arrive.

Any good antenna will work with the X6100, just don't forget to add a BCI Filter. Build one yourself. It is a must for the X6100.

My favorite is the Doublet Dipole. Taking full advantage of the internal ATU in the Xiegu X6100, becomes an agile antenna for all bands. Just only extend the required length of radiating elements (as per the antenna published table) for the lowest band I will be using for that day and all the highest bands are available instantaneously too. No need to modify anything. It is also a very quiet antenna.

Enjoy your radio and keep experimenting. Have built a lot of wire antennas to experiment with, including my own verticals for cheap enjoyment.
Ham Radio has a wide variety of different things to specialize in. Antenna experimenting, build your own transmitters, build your own receivers, construction of power supplies, propagation experimentation, digital modes, Boat-Anchor restoration, Boat-Anchor collecting, ham radio from the beginning of time, building your own transmitters with vacuum tubes, QRP, High Power, Amplifier Construction, and you may specialize on only one single band like the "tragic band" 6 Meter band, VHF, UHF, Moon Bouncing, Satellite, CW Only, Phone, DX Chasing, Rag-chew on CW, Phone, etc. you name it!!!?

Just enjoy your hobby....

There is really not much you could be doing wrong.?? The only thing I have seen (assuming you are using the "original" version) is some folks have the center conductor on the BNC connector connected to the ground spike side.

I also have a PAC-12.? I have tried to use once at a park event, but could not get it working.? I am sure something I am doing wrong.? But as Jeff said it does look good.

I have the Wonder Wand small telescopic that can do 160M - 440 I've made a few contacts on but, my favorite small "vertical" antenna is an Alexloop mag loop.? It's vertically polarized but also bi-directional.? It way outperforms other small vertical antennas I've tried.? John KB3NWU
