Change of timezone not saved.
Getting past the Oath Advertising was my first problem, although not why I posted. The advertising is as intrusive and flashy as a "cheap porn site," as a Web design manual put it. It means that I am effectively locked out of managing my account. Surely Verizon can do better? The real question is: My TZ has changed from Summer time (UTC+11) to Winter time (UTC+10). I have changed the details in the GUI several times. I have edited my "Private directory" config file to show winter file. Every attempt to save the details creates a new copy of the config file with the CORRECT new circumstances. But nothing will make the change permanent in the GUI. My details in the config are as follows: Bendigo, Australia ; 36 45 00 S ; 144 20 00 E ; 225.0 ; EST-10EDT-11,M10.1.0,M4.5.0 I would have expected a comma, or at least a space, between EST and EDT, but I haven't tried fiddling. The correct winter time seems to be used, but I would be happier if the GUI was correct. Having my winter during American summer seems to cause problems. XEphem on Raspberry Pi Zero W
I don't know if anyone has XEphem running on a Raspberry Pi Zero W. My build instructions are the similar, less adding the i386 architecture. apt install build-essential git libxext-dev x11proto-xext-dev libxau-dev x11proto-print-dev xutils-dev libtool libtool-bin gfortran-multilib libmotif-dev libx11-dev libxmu-dev libxt-dev x11proto-print-dev libxm4:i386 libuil4:i386 libmrm4:i386 libxm4 libuil4 libmrm4 libmotif-common libmotif-dev libxmu-dev autoconf tcsh libssl-dev git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/xorg/lib/libXp cd libXp ./autogen.sh ./configure make sudo make install sudo ln -s /usr/local/lib/libXp.so.6.2.0 /usr/lib/libXp.so.6.2.0 sudo ln -s /usr/local/lib/libXp.so.6 /usr/lib/libXp.so.6 I then downloaded the latest version of the code, added the patch, and then compiled and installed as normal. It works pretty well on the Pi. It does have some hesitation. I have it running on the Mate desktop. I probably could have gone a bit more light weight. It's running on a 43" flat-panel TV. Burning 209M/434M, Load average is 1.98 (the strength of 2 processors when it only has one). Running on Openbox: Burning 117M/434M Load Average is 0.98. Tests were with a 00:05:00 step and max steps with no pause. I would say that's a pretty impressive setup. You could potentially get a touchscreen, battery and use this as a field device.

OpenSUSE for XEphem under VirtualBox

Wow!! It's a shame that OpenSUSE under VB behaves so badly! Or is it just me? I was excited to run XEphem under OpenSUSE but OPENSUSE doesn't work well under VB.

Optimal Unix (Linux) foe XEphem?

I'm getting ready to create a VirtualBox purely for the purpose of running XEphem. Does anybody have any recommendations on what flavor of Linux I should use? I'd like the installation of XEphem to be as painless as possible. I have lots of experience setting up VMs. John Perry

SOLVED: Error "https get: sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov: ssl send error code: 1" on OS X El Capitan
3
Hi, everybody. FIRST: Let me arrive late to the party and say thank you to Elwood for so many great years of XEphem. I started with XEphem back in 2003 on Linux and then migrated seamlessly over to OS X in 2007. I was a happy commercial user and have never regretted the purchase. Thanks, Elwood! ~~~~~~~ Mac OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan user here. I've just finished compiling 3.7.7 with the below-mentioned patch and I wanted to share my solution for the below error seen when attempting to download the the latest SOHO files: https get: sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov: ssl send error code: 1 The patch was successfully applied, since this error is different than with the unpatched build. The OpenSSL version originally shipped with El Capitan is: OpenSSL 0.9.8zh 3 Dec 2015. Apple stopped shipping the header files, so I ended up downloading the full source for the original version and compiling against that. Unfortunately, that results in the error seen above. I'm assuming that their side was refusing the connection because the old OpenSSL version couldn't do better than TLS 1.0. SOLUTION: Download the latest (currently OpenSSL 1.1.0f 25 May 2017), compile, install and try again. Given that Apple is deprecating OpenSSL in favour of their own stuff, I chose to set the installation prefix to '/usr' and overwrite the system installation. You pays your money and you takes your chances. Cheers, everybody. trane // // Trane Francks trane@... Tokyo, Japan // Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty. Full stellar spectral classification?
5
Hi there, I am a new user and am very impressed with the comprehensive nature of XEphem.. But having recently got into spectroscopy, I was looking for the full spectral classification of stars. Thus I can see if something is B-type (say), and even the subdivision therein, but I don't seem t be able to see the luminosity class (Roman numeral usually) and alphabetic designation for any special characteristic (e.g 'e' for strong emission lines). These data are available, for instance, in the General Variable Star catalogue (GCVS), but can we access it from inside XEphem? If not are there any plans to make this available? Alternatively, I see there are instructions on the web for making .edb files, is it possible for us to do a suitable home-brewed .edb version of GCVS? cheers

XEphem on Ubuntu 16.x
2
Is this still a problem? I currently have it running on 16.04.x LTS and 16.10. I had to build the missing libraries from scratch, but it runs perfectly. I've got the ability to build debs and post them on my server if anyone is interested. Jay C. Theriot

SOHO images in Linux?
12
Hi everyone, I am running XEphem 3.7.7 in Arch Linux, and I noticed I cannot download the latest SOHO images. It looks like they changed the site to use SSL (port 443) and the program isn't handling the redirection at this point. Has anyone else encountered this and is there a fix? I saw in the help that the URL should be configurable in the file XEphem.SOHOhost, but I do not appear to have such a file on my system? Any ideas would be great. Thank you! Rick

Downloads and Web Updates
9
When I try to get the current Sun image or do a web update I get an error message saying "http get: Can not find IP of xxx Try entering IP directly" I can access the wwwsoho page and the celestrak and cfa-www pages by web browser but not through xephem. The asteroid data set downloads both work O.K. through xephem. Any ideas ?

thanks for using XEphem
13
Hello everyone, Some of you quickly noticed I recently removed XEphem from my web site. I didn't think there was much interest any longer so I was surprised at the outpouring of everything from anger to grief. It doesn't help that a few people thought they had a right to access XEphem and demanded I put it back up but most of the responses expressed appreciation for past availability and politely wished there might be a way to provide that again. Some of my reasons for pulling it include: steadily decreasing accuracy, especially moons waning availability of Motif and associated libraries increased expectations for security more and more data providers require https access my own dwindling energy levels as I age slowly but surely I started XEphem in 1990, based directly on ephem which I started in 1982. I am still surprised that it has enjoyed a wonderful 26 year run. I'm also honored that it is in use at every professional observatory with which I have had contact. I also acknowledge the many contributions over the years that helped the program mature. But the fact remains it is growing less and less viable. Some suggest that I provide XEphem as Open Source. I fully understand how that can lead to perpetual growth, but you must understand XEphem is my "baby" and I just can not release it to the wilds. The ownership of XEphem will follow me to the grave. Writing this note has allowed me to reminisce in my mind all the many events surrounding XEphem over the past several decades. I can understand how those of you who have used it for many years will also miss it. So I have resurrected most of the XEphem web site, including a page for downloading all the source code and data sets. There is no longer a commercial edition, I offer no support and I do not expect to make any future updates but of course no one can foretell the future. Best wishes to all... and thanks for using XEphem. Sincerely, Elwood Downey

libXp removed from Debian
8
Just a heads-up for anyone building XEphem on Debian: Debian unstable ("Sid") and testing ("stretch") have removed the libxp6 package that used to provide libXp.so. Here is the bug tracking that (apparently they've been planning to remove it for years): https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=657253 The XEphem source comes with a static copy of Motif (libXm), though it's always built fine with the version available in Debian, but it doesn't come with a copy of libXp. Someone suggested snapshot.debian.org to me as a possible place to get a copy of the libxp6 source and build it locally; I'll look into that eventually and report back. But for now, there is no straightforward way to get XEphem working on any Debian newer than Jessie. Elwood, what does XEphem use libXp.so for? I'm wondering if it's something I could just comment out locally if it's something I don't use. ...Akkana
