That would be nice. Or something that works with apt-get.

Re: XEphem crash upon date selection

Tested on Ubuntu 20.04 - Mate distribution. Tested on 4 machines here. Hobby environment.
No crash on Date selection. Pointed, clicked. No crash - and the skyview updated when selected.

On install of the Ubuntu 20.04 - did the system time, and time zone get updated to your locality {system - not XEphem}?

Guy Hollander

Re: XEphem crash upon date selection

Hi,

I recompiled xephem with the attached Makefile:

tar xvf xephem-3.7.7.tar.gz
cd xephem-3.7.7/GUI/xephem
make
strip xephem
sudo? cp xephem <installation dir>

Perhaps this helps.

Regards, Werner

Re: XEphem crash upon date selection

Dear Bernie,

Thank you for your message. Below are the installation that the IT people tell me they have used:

sudo apt-get update

Download and uncompress the archive XEphem-3.7.7-disk1.tgz

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:zeehio/libxp
sudo apt update

sudo apt-get install -y libxp-dev

sudo apt-get install libmotif-dev libxmu-dev

cd Downloads/XEphem-3.7.7-disk1/XEphem-3.7.7-disk1/
Run the XEphem install script:
sudo ./linux_install.sh

Start XEphem:
xephem&

Does this sound right to you?

Yours,
Maxime

Re: XEphem crash upon date selection

I am sorry to hear that.

I too have Ubuntu 20.04 (with Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.1), but I do not have the problem you describe. Curious to learn whether anyone else sees that difficulty.

It's still an amazing program. I haven't found another modern program that would replace it.

There are many Astronomical programs, but, IMHO, none that do all of what XEphem does. I guess the search for an decent replacement starts.

make: *** [Makefile:196: xephem] Error 1

I think the problem is that motif is completely deprecated.

I have since found KStars. It's almost as good as xephem. It has bugs
here and there that cause it to crash but I it gives a similar interface
that xephem does.

Hello,
I have successfully installed XEphem on Ubuntu 18.04 using the libxp
package from Sergio Oller:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:zeehio/libxp
sudo apt update
sudo apt-get install -y libxp-dev

Though I have not tried it, it seems that Sergio has updated it to 20.04.

Maxime

Thanks.

I tried that and the make went further until it hit:

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXmu
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [Makefile:196: xephem] Error 1

I think the problem is that motif is completely deprecated.

I vaguely remember having to build xprint from source, this was on a
Raspberry Pi back a couple Raspbian versions. You could try searching
the archives of this list for xprint, but I think I mentioned it on
the raspberrrypi.org forum.

See about the middle of the first page at

which was my post. xprintf vanished between Jessie and Stretch but it
tells on that page how I got it installed.

I tried two routes, neither worked:

Analysis: After much searching and library install attempts, this file
seems long deprecated and not available for ubuntu 20.04

#2 compile from scratch using make MOTIF=../../libXm/linux86 (with the
MOTFI and MOTIFL variables suitably modified in the makefile)
Result: crash because aavso.c can't find X11/extensions/Print.h The
directory exists but Print.h does not because it is part of Xprint which
has been deprecated since 2008 according to wikipedia.

Has anyone been able to make xephem work on ubuntu 20.04? If so how?
Yep. Have compiled and installed it on an Ubuntu 20.04 box. Cannot remember
any problems, but needed to install some libs, probably the ones for Motif.

I will try again tomorrow and see, whether I can reproduce the issue you
have and how to fix it...

Re: Can't get xephem to work in ubuntu 20.04

An XEphem user with a *.pl web-page (as I recall) provided the package I finally was able to install in my Linux Mint Ubuntu ver.20. It works fine.

Unfortunately I cannot locate my notes, but I'll keep looking.
