Tested on Ubuntu 20.04 - Mate distribution. Tested on 4 machines here. Hobby environment. No crash on Date selection. Pointed, clicked. No crash - and the skyview updated when selected.
On install of the Ubuntu 20.04 - did the system time, and time zone get updated to your locality {system - not XEphem}?
