Re: Xephem install mac osx 10.11.6 El Capitan
1. installed XQuartz ( https://www.xquartz.org/ ) if you haven't already
2. open Terminal and type these commands:
curl -o XEphem-3.7.7-disk1.tgz

Re: getting the latest sun pictures
Karl,
Following up, you can apply the patch by following Doug's directions here:
/g/xephem/message/3561
It's also worth noting that there is a new patch in the User contrib
folder

Re: getting the latest sun pictures
Hi, Karl.
I'm pretty sure that you only need to recompile the software with the
OpenSSL patch. Grab the latest 3.7.7 source and then visit the "User
contrib" to download the Open SSL patch from Lutz

getting the latest sun pictures
I think this has been broken for quite a while.
Is there something that I need to do on the user side to fix this?

Re: Cannot get to run on MAC running macOS Mojave 10.14.3
Victory!
Turns out XQuartz was a defective installation; apparently XEphem was trying to get an X-window, and failing, it became unresponsive.? Elwood was on the right track, and others offered

Or start xeyes or xclock or some other X app and see if XQuartz starts up when you do that.

Re: Cannot get to run on MAC running macOS Mojave 10.14.3
When I click on XEphem I also see T1 where you describe for just a moment,
then it turns into XQuartz. I don't know what T1 is but evidently it is
some intermediate step in bringing up xquartz.
Try

Re: Cannot get to run on MAC running macOS Mojave 10.14.3
Timothy,
unfortunately, I have explored the others, and I miss using XEphem (I had it running on a Linux machine I no longer have).? It really is the best for my intended use; the only one that does

Re: Cannot get to run on MAC running macOS Mojave 10.14.3
yes, I have the disk 1 tarball; it untars to a folder "XEphem-3.7.7-disk1"; under it, among other things, is "XEphem.app".? When I click on that, the icon "XE" appears in the program bar, and "T1"

Re: Cannot get to run on MAC running macOS Mojave 10.14.3
When u double click the xephem.app what process is running, you'll see it on the upper left, like Finder, Safari, etc, it should be X windows I think.
Yes untar both, doesn't matter where u just want

Re: Cannot get to run on MAC running macOS Mojave 10.14.3
Thanks folks, I appreciate your efforts to get me going; unfortunately no go so far.
I am now grasping at straws; I have re-downloaded the tar ball (and deleted the old stuff). I have made sure that

Re: Cannot get to run on MAC running macOS Mojave 10.14.3
Gosh, I didn¡¯t notice that, Trane is absolutely correct, XEphem.app must be
a folder, not a file. I have no clue how that could change. Maybe download
the tarball again and start over?
