Or start xeyes or xclock or some other X app and see if XQuartz starts up when you do that.

When I click on XEphem I also see T1 where you describe for just a moment, then it turns into XQuartz. I don't know what T1 is but evidently it is some intermediate step in bringing up xquartz.
Try this: open your Applications folder then open Utilities then start XQuartz directly. What happens?
