I tried to install XEphem recently after a long break, and had
problems. It is no longer being developed. It is a 32-bit application.
OpenSuse seems to have good 32-bit support. In addition, a
contributed patch was released, to comply with the requirements of the
upgraded OpenSSL. I have a copy.
VirtualBox is not a complete OS. You may do better under VMware.

Wow!! It's a shame that OpenSUSE under VB behaves so badly! Or is it
just me?
I was excited to run XEphem under OpenSUSE but OPENSUSE doesn't work
well under VB.
