Status of new Xcat boards
I'm happily surprised?there is still interest in the Xcats it was a fun and challenging project.
I spoke to Lee yesterday and he's still working on a final batch of boards.? ?This has been in process for quite some time but he still intends to finish them ASAP.? Lee has had his money tired up in PCBs and components for this batch for several years now.?? I'll let the list know when the status changes.? I know I have 4 Xcats in my garage somewhere, but I've been unable to find them.? When I do I'll put them on ebay and announce the announce the auction here. 73's Skip WB6YMH |
Re: new or used
Hi Erik, I have an Xcat I bought years ago for a project, but other than some testing I never put it into service. I recently revived the project with a change in direction, so I really don't have a need for the Xcat anymore. Contact me directly if you are interested in it. Re: xCat module's for sale
As i remember a video was once available that showed the xCat in action and showed a bunch of features that Lee Dusbabek, (N7LD) built into his demo radio. At the time (10 Years ago) i contracted Lee Dusbabek, (N7LD) to install one of his xCat boards into a working Low Band - high power Syntor radios. He wired in a bunch of features link a high power/low power selection. I never used the radio but would be willing to sell it to you for $300 plus shipping from Los Angeles California.

FREE SyntorX radios
I have a large quantity of approx. 30 VHF SyntorX radios, believed to all be T73/T83 models, along with wiring harnesses, controls heads (in various configurations), speakers, mics., etc.? ? ?All are FREE but must picked picked up in the Daytona Beach FL area no later than June 7, 2020.? ?No exceptions to that, I will not ship or deliver.? ?These radios were pulls from local police, fire and other city departments so the majority should be in working condition.? ? I also have a number of Syntor drawers (not SyntorX), some control cables, etc., but little if any control heads.
If interested, please email me at dbrock411@....? ? No catches, no gimmicks, I'm giving them all away, conditioned on them being picked up no later than June 7th! |
Re: Boards
I wasn't suggesting respinning the board, just that logistically things are much simpler for hobbyist?projects in 2020 than they were back in 2004. I never would have tackled the project alone, I built a point to point version for myself and was basically done.? Lee wanted a few and so he layed out a PCB.... it took off from there. 73's Skip WB6YMH On Sun, May 3, 2020 at 4:51 PM steve gunsel <steve@...> wrote: Any idea how many boards we are talking about? If only a few, not much point in going hog wild. These moto radios are getting pretty old. I would like to see a compact control head to go with the xcat. Came up with a few preliminary designs some time ago but never progressed beyond that. I wonder if there are more modern PICs that could be drop in replacements in the xcat.? |

Re: Boards
Hi Steve, The biggest issue is time.? I don't build the boards, I'm just the "software guy".? It's not practical for Lee to make boards one at a time so he does them in batches which makes the time commitment?larger.? My understanding is that he has PCBs and processors but needs to order some of the other parts.? The processor is very difficult to hand solder, but the rest isn't too bad.? Way back (16 years ago in 2004!) we decided against kitting the Xcat because we were concerned about the soldering skills and equipment available at the time. If we were doing this project today there are lots of Chinese board houses such as??can do cheap fast and decent quality PCBs *AND* assembly fast and cheap.? The board setup fee alone back in 2004 would probably buy 50 built and assembled boards today.? Of course you have to use parts that already use and I doubt?the archaic PIC I used in 2004 is on that list... 73's Skip WB6YMH On Sat, May 2, 2020 at 9:05 AM steve gunsel <steve@...> wrote: Skip, Not sure what is involved in making the boards...anything we can do to help? |
