? I was just making an insincere wise crack. I truely never looked into the why, but what you said makes perfect sense.
From a uCs perspective that needs to output 4-bit data, it comes pre-parsed and saves some shifting and ANDing steps to make it presentable.
I forget that there was still a lot of 4 bit data design from that era as well. I think the synthesized GE's from that era were 4-bit based and maybe the original Syntor too?
I remember seeing an article on how to replace the narrow DIP with a DIY std wide DIP socket for "modern" EEPROMs.

Did you ever write anything to generate the codeplug data the original Syntor?
