Japan Stations on 20 Meter FT8
A few people at last weeks meeting mentioned never working anything beyond the west coast going west. The last few days, quite a few Japanese stations have been on FT8 between 5 and 6:30 PM local time. I was able to work quite a few with my vertical. I don't know if they are workable in other modes, but hopefully it will keep up. Give it a listen if you haven't recently. -- Brian K2AS -- Brian -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- k2as@... http://xarc.us http://k2as.us https://www.qrz.com/db/K2AS

ARRL DX Contest (Phone) 2
I was able to spend a few hours this weekend operating in the ARRL Phone DX Contest. I had contacts on 80, 40, 20 and 15 meters. Just did search and pounce and picked up 85 QSOs, with 66 multipliers, and a little over 17K score. This was the first time using an amplifier, and even at only 600 watts PEP, it made a big difference. Plus a more modern radio with a Heil headset / footswitch helped as well. I might have picked up a new country or two. My modest vertical antenna was good enough, at least to work a bunch of high power, professional contest stations with massive towers and antennas! I did work ZM1A in New Zealand on 40 meters around 1 AM Sunday morning. I did submit under XRX ARC if anyone else is going to submit a log. Anyone operate at all during the contest? -- Brian -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- k2as@... http://xarc.us http://k2as.us https://www.qrz.com/db/K2AS

Thursday Meeting
I haven't had a chance to discuss this with the club board, but I'm trying to put something together for the meeting Thursday - A couple of things on tomorrow's meeting: For this months special topic, I wanted to discuss FT8. Being quite busy at work and home, I looked for some useful presentations and found one I hope to be perfect as a starting point. So the special topic will be FT8 where I hope to have a virtual special guest. Then maybe members who use FT8 can discuss their experiences with it. To enable the previous bullet, does anyone have a good small audio setup or powered speakers we could use for taking PC audio and amplifying? I have some small PC powered speakers, but quality is not great. If you have something that might work to put out decent audio in our meeting room, let me know. -- Brian -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- k2as@... http://xarc.us http://k2as.us https://www.qrz.com/db/K2AS

March XARC Newsletter 4
de K2AS So I missed sending out a newsletter in February, which is OK since there wasn't a whole lot of news. But I want to thank Harry KF2TV for his fine presentation on the Nano Vector Network Analyzer in February. He built on his January show-and-tell and came up with a detailed overview of these devices. He even did some live demos of it in action. The March meeting was not quite as lively, as only six ventured out facing down the covid-19 and the toilet paper hoarders. We had a somewhat shorter, but nice meeting nonetheless. Obviously, the April meeting is not likely to happen. We will wait a week or two, but I don't see this easing quickly. In the mean-time, our weekly net meets at 8PM on Thursday evenings on the 145.29 repeater. Check-in and stay in touch. Of course Dayton has now been cancelled, and that was scheduled for mid-May. As for other upcoming meetings, time will tell. We had hoped to have a presentation on longwave, Dusty KF2CF has been in contact with the presenter, but has not been able to pin down a date yet. Current events will make it worse. I was going to throw something together on FT8 for March, but again the timing couldn't have been worse. Though we have covered it's predecessor JT65 a few years ago, FT8 has gained a tremendous amount of fans. So many that probably a large number of our active members are regular users. But I think there is still value in having it as a topic. ?Fox Hunt As of last Thursday, it was scheduled for May 2. Drumlins ARC, and SIARC were going to be involved. Again, stay tuned if it needs to be postponed. Field Day ?Still on schedule. ARES will be helping out again. Still at Webster Rec. E-Mail List The old Yahoogroups email list has been shutdown. So that's that. Here is info on the new one: Group Email Addresses Post: [email protected] Subscribe: [email protected] Unsubscribe: [email protected] Group Owner: [email protected] Help: [email protected] Club Treasury There have been no significant changes to the treasury in the past month. Details are in the Members section of the website. Club Repeaters I have received the DR2X from Yaesu. I will likely get it swapped out with the old machine in the next two weeks. You won't notice much difference, but initially I will have some voice announcements about nets and meetings/events in FM analog mode. Sunday evenings at 8PM the repeater is usually linked up for the Southern Tier Fusion Net. Digital only. If you have a fusion radio, check-in and say hi. ?Club History Moment ?Paul, N2PB during our Fox Hunt from 1997. April ?Tentatively scheduled for April 9. Stay tuned. New Members ?I don't believe we have had any new members in the past two months. 73, K2AS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- k2as@... http://xarc.us http://k2as.us https://www.qrz.com/db/K2AS

foxhunt opportunity tonight 2
foxhunters, and wannabe hunters, the ROC city net is on tonight at 7:30 pm on 145.11. They've been hearing something interfering with them on the repeater input of 144.51. They've tried to track it down to near Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester between Lake and Dewey, but also have heard it south of Rochester. Please listen tonight and try to get a bearing and/or signal strength. Coordinate on 145.29 so we don't tip off the jammer. Thanks for your help. Jon N2JAC text 5852040413

Upgraded 2 Meter Repeater 2
This morning Harry W2HRY and myself swapped out the 2 meter machine with the new Yaesu DR2X. All settings are pretty much the same. It appears the amplifier we had been using was not working, so we set the new machine to high power (near 50 watts), which it can safely handle. It does have voice announcement capability, but we need to get a second RX antenna up first. Soon - Switching to DCS (Digital Coded Squelch) ?We occasionally have had issues with the squelch hanging open with some interference/noise. It has happened during a couple of our 2 meter nets, which is more than a little annoying and often will cause the time-out-timer to trip. DCS is supposed to be superior to PL or CTCSS and theoretically should eliminate that issue. Unfortunately it will probably require you to get into your radios menu system and manual. But it will be worth it. I DON'T PLAN ON SWITCHING FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS, BUT IF WE CONTINUE TO HAVE ISSUES THE TIMELINE COULD BE MOVED UP. I will send out another note whenever the change to DCS happens. -- Brian -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- k2as@... http://xarc.us http://k2as.us https://www.qrz.com/db/K2AS

No Meeting at Webster Rec This Month
Not a surprise I'm sure, but to make it official, there will be no meeting at Webster Rec this Thursday April 9. Webster Rec is actually closed, and they have cancelled all reservations of meeting rooms for the first half of the month. I am tempted to try a web meeting, but I think we would need more time to prepare. So we will have our usual Thursday night net on the repeater instead. Hope to hear you there. -- Brian -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- k2as@... http://xarc.us http://k2as.us https://www.qrz.com/db/K2AS
