My 2 cents Back in the day of 2 meter on X square, this stuff drove me nuts. For those of you that remember the cheap scanners mixing with fire frequency plus lots of other stuff and I got blamed?for the consumer junk. We added the extra filters (wacom cans).? ?I also had automated weather stations on the repeater. One of the sources of bad signals was cable. If the cable was compromised like loose terminators or someone illegally tapping created spurs?that came out on frequency. Remember, it only takes a short conductor to act as an antenna. Perhaps now with the addition of fibre some of this stuff is better. Finally, today, after 3 and a half months, RG&E made a repair on a power pole near my house.? It was the pole I had pinpointed.? Unfortunately, I can't immediately say the problem is solved.
Around March 17th, the problem abated for the most part, until it finally came back on April 13th.? An engineer was able to verify the problem on April 15th.? But April 16th?around 5PM before a crew could get out there, the problem became intermittent
for about an hour and then went away again.
A crew made a repair this morning and let me know.? So I will have to just keep monitoring and see if it comes back.? I do still see some occasional noise spikes, which may just be normal, or I am seeing it still act up, or there could be another source of
noise that is intermittent in the area.? It shouldn't be a problem unless it gets worse.
It has been interesting to see and hear about how common these situations are.? Have you ever been driving with a 2 meter radio in the car that is squelched, and then when passing through an area all of a sudden, the squelch opens up and all you hear is noise??
I always wondered why that was and assumed it was nearby machinery or grow lights or something, but likely a power line problem.
If you ever have a noise problem that is preventing you from enjoying your radios, I now have some info and tools that may be helpful.

Looking for DStar Users to Test Reflector

Hello,
If you are a DStar user and have access to reflectors via a hotspot or other means, I could use some help testing out a new capability.? I recently added a transcoding server to XLX927.? DMR <--> Fusion had been working natively in XLX, but the addition of
the transcoding server should provide DStar <—> Fusion and DMR real-time transcoding.? I don't have a DStar radio, but some initial testing with Steve KA1CNF seemed to be successful.? But some real experience with DStar users, and either Fusion or DMR users
on the other side of the conversation would help flesh out any issues.
Since I am not well versed in connecting DStar to XLX, or anything else for that matter, I will not be too specific, XLX is supposed to handle DPlus, DExtra, and DCS protocols.? The reflector ID is XLX927, and we want to connect to Module B.? Maybe XLX927BL??
If you need URCALL or DTMF codes, they can be found here:
From there you can check the Repeaters/Nodes button to see your connection, or the User/Modules button to see recent activity.
You may want to just see if you can connect to XLX927 first.? Assuming that works, I can be available to test with either Fusion or DMR on my end.? Contact me at the email address below to setup a test QSO.? Or if you have a buddy willing to connect with DMR or Fusion, feel free to try it out.? You can connect to XLX927 on DMR using WPSD (and I assume Pi-Star), or using YSF00927 or XLX927 using Fusion with a hotspot.? At the moment, DMR access via one of the DMR networks is not enabled.??
Let me know if any questions, and also of any successes or problems encountered.

ARRL RFI Follow-Up

Within 1 day of contacting Steve Anderson, W1EMI, he wrote a letter to the CEO of RG&E asking for assistance in resolving my power line RFI issues.
Luckily my efforts to locate the source and contacting RG&E myself?have probably helped move this along quickly.
The bad news is the problem has become more intermittent, possibly affected by humidity and other wx factors.? It hasn't been on full blast for a few days, but at night I notice spikes of noise on the higher bands.? It seems that there is some arcing but not
enough to be self-sustaining.? I'm hoping this isn't something that will have to wait until next winter to be resolved.
I have a copy of the letter, it is probably a fairly standard one they send out, explaining the issue, with my name and address as a contact, along with ARRL and W1EMI's contact info.? A copy was also sent to the FCC.? So it probably will get to the right people
and prioritized a bit higher than it has so far.
With my 137Mhz yagi, attenuator, ultrasonic dish, and RFI mapper setup, and contacts with W4DD and W1EMI at ARRL, I guess I'm now a power line noise RFI subject matter expert.? Probably not an expert, but well versed in the topic.

Another RFI Update

As I received some new info today about my RFI issues, I thought I would pass it along as some may be interested.
As noted previously, I believe I have identified the source of my noise to a RG&E power pole about 1/3 mile from my house.? I first contacted RG&E on Jan. 6 via phone and reported the issue, and via certified letter on March 3.? On March 3, I also made a formal
complaint on the FCC website.
Not a word from RG&E since the problem was first reported, now nearing 3 months.
Today I received an email from someone at the FCC, who advised me to contact Steve Anderson at the ARRL (she CC'ed him in the email).? I was aware of Steve via Jeff W4DD, but had been waiting a bit before contacting him.
Steve sent me an email shortly thereafter, and instructed me to fill out a form, for which he sent me a link.? The form is quite detailed, and allowed me to describe the problem and its history.? It also asked for the utility name and address, along with the
CEOs name.
He wants me to create an audio file next time it occurs.? I did send him a link to the videos I made back in January.
The noise problem has become more intermittent since the end of January, but has still been occurring fairly often.? I suspect temperature and especially humidity are a factor.? So it will be interesting to see if they get involved.? I got the impression the
FCC has delegated this to the ARRL to handle and will not get involved until the ARRL has been unsuccessful.
The FCC person indicated one does not have to be an ARRL member to use this service.
