January ARRL VHF Entry for XARC ?

Hello All,

Earlier in the year Brian published a history of the Rochester Cup and the outstanding performance of XARC in winning the ARRL club gavel in the medium club category in the 90s. Times have changed, but the fun of local contesting is alive and well in our area. Recent ARRL rules changes have made it easier for smaller clubs (called local clubs) to participate with rovers (mobile stations). It could be a fun activity to get a few club members at home and a few to go out as rovers to a couple of grid squares and see what your equipment can do. In the local club category, you are limited to 10 entries and the fixed stations must be within a circle with a 35 mile radius. That seems like the right entry class for XARC, though you can decide to center the circle anywhere you choose. There is a little bit of up front work to do with the ARRL, but I would be happy to do this if there is interest. I can also present at a club meeting later in the year to explain tips and tricks for increasing your score and possibly coming away with a winning club entry.?

Just an idea to consider that is available to all classes of operators.?

73,

Jarred?

Below - 35-mile radius circle centered around Henrietta. Does this cover a majority of club members?

September XARC Meeting

开云体育

Hello all,

Our September meeting is 7PM Thursday Sept. 14 at the Webster Rec Center.? We'll have the usual agenda, find out what people have been during this summer, and K2AS will be presenting on assembling a Novice or vintage station.

We will have a Zoom session as well, but be advised it is best to attend in person if you can.

Hope to see you there.

Brian

Antenna Help

Lou, K2ANC has? an antenna that is misbehaving.? At the young age of 89, Lou is not certified for roof climbing.? Good chance it is a simple fix, but requires going up on his 1 1/2 story roof.? I am willing to go up, but would like one or two guys to help.? Lou has a ladder and plenty of tools if needed.? Probably not required to go up on the roof, but you can if comfortable.

Let me know if you can help, and we can set up a time with Lou.

Brian

Vintage Test Equipment

开云体育

All,

Lou, K2ANC has donated some equipment to the club.? I stopped by his place yesterday and picked it up.? In addition, he also donated a more modern accessory, a Timewave Navigator.? The Timewave Navigator, I might consider keeping for the club, but will discuss with members.? It could be usable for Field Day if we wanted to run digital modes on a not so modern rig.? It currently sells for $375.? The vintage test equipment I thought I might take to the hamfest, but will probably research some more before doing that.? But if someone in the club really wants these items, maybe we can come up with a fair price.? Please don't ask if you are planning on flipping them for a higher price.

The two units are:

  • HP 200AB Audio Generator
  • HP 410B VTVM

Both seem to power up, but are untested at the moment.? Units in similar condition can be found on eBay.? The Audio Generators are selling for a bit under $100.? The VTVM is another story.? One is listed for $795, others for several hundred.? One of the best VTVMs of it's day, so I guess it is in demand.? But I want to research some more.

If anyone in the club would like to purchase one of these, email me directly, and we can discuss.

If not, we might try the VTVM on eBay to maximize our return.

Brian

Thanks Joe, but I have a couple of options already for substitutes in the 5K range.? I also found a short shaft 3K ohm that I might try to swap the longer shaft and wiper with.? Both are CTS pots, so it might work.

Thanks again for looking!? I had a couple of 20K, but getting pretty far from the design value and might really narrow my usuable range or worse.? Then again, the RF Gain is 10K, but initial check seems OK, maybe a bit noisy.? We'll see.

I've got a cap kit on the way from Hayseed hamfest.? The rig is working (other than AF gain), but at 52 years old, capacitors are probably at or close to failure, and don't want to damage things like power transformer.

These seem to be hard to come by these days, as I have been searching

probably will get as close as I can with a substitute if no luck, but
