Re: Winlink VARA

Jarred,
Yes, the local RMS / Relay stations KD2DO-10 and KD2DO-11 do operate in the fast VARA mode. We have been getting up to? 2000-7000 bytes per minute on the 12 meter RMS when there are no interfering stations.

Also, a VARA license does include VARA HF and VARA FM with one license.? In addition to using Winlink Express, you can also use VARA HF with VarAC which is a chat mode on HF.

Send me a Winlink message via one of the KD2DO RMSs..? Just address it to W2SKY.

I think there are not many messages using Winlink during FD.? FT8 is much better.? However, Paul and I sent Winlink messages to our WNY SM (worth 100 points) and to 10 other stations worth an additional?100 points) for our W2XRX operation.

My question is about VARA FM and HF. I overheard that the connection speed was very slow. It seems that the slow connection may be a result of the free version. I am more than willing to buy the full software. What I don't know is if the gateways in our area support the full version so I can get the full speed if I buy the license??

Also does anyone know if VARA FM and VARA HF are covered by the same license or do I need to buy different ones.?

Thanks,

Jarred

Re: Winlink VARA

I got everything setup on my IC-705 and communicating on both VARA HF and FM with KD2DO-10. I tried 40m (slow) and 2m (much faster). I did not notice any difference in speed with the licensed version of the software, but I have it now and it does apply to both HF and FM. Its all loaded on the laptop and ready to go for next field day or whenever it might come in handy.?

During last halloween?I thought the offender was traveling mainly on the East side.? Near?the end he was extremely strong at Harris hill in Penfield and traveling South.

What to Bring to Field Day

Folks,

Attached is a resend of the checklist for everyone to consider bringing to FD.? If you have anything useful but? not on the list, please just bring it.

It's looking like this year's FD is going to be a wet one, so come prepared for some rain.? Fortunately there is a shelter on site that has plenty of room, so staying dry should not be a major problem.

Wire antenna set up is Friday, June 23 at 10:00 AM.? The triband yagi, rigs, logging network, and power distribution are planned to be set up Saturday morning starting at 10:00AM.? The contest itself runs from 2:00 PM Saturday to 2:00 PM Sunday.? Take down begins at 2:00 PM Sunday and should be complete by 4:00 PM.

All are welcome to our Field Day.? I hope you will join us for all or part of the weekend.
