Re: March XARC Newsletter

Have you?considered doing the meeting/presentation online? I could even done hybrid where a presentation is shown on the internet and then we ask questions or discuss on the repeater.

So I missed sending out a newsletter in February, which is OK since there wasn't a whole lot of news.

But I want to thank Harry KF2TV for his fine presentation on the Nano Vector Network Analyzer in February.? He built on his January show-and-tell and came up with a detailed overview of these devices.? He even did some live demos of it in action.

The March meeting was not quite as lively, as only six ventured out facing down the covid-19 and the toilet paper hoarders.? We had a somewhat shorter, but nice meeting nonetheless.

Obviously, the April meeting is not likely to happen.? We will wait a week or two, but I don't see this easing quickly.? In the mean-time, our weekly net meets at 8PM on Thursday evenings on the 145.29 repeater.? Check-in and stay in touch.

Of course Dayton has now been cancelled, and that was scheduled for mid-May.

As for other upcoming meetings, time will tell.? We had hoped to have a presentation on longwave, Dusty KF2CF has been in contact with the presenter, but has not been able to pin down a date yet.? Current events will make it worse.

I was going to throw something together on FT8 for March, but again the timing couldn't have been worse.? Though we have covered it's predecessor JT65 a few years ago, FT8 has gained a tremendous amount of fans.? So many that probably a large number of our active members are regular users.? But I think there is still value in having it as a topic.

Fox Hunt
As of last Thursday, it was scheduled for May 2.? Drumlins ARC, and SIARC were going to be involved.? Again, stay tuned if it needs to be postponed.

Field Day
Still on?schedule.? ARES will be helping out again.? Still at Webster Rec.

E-Mail List
The old Yahoogroups email list has been shutdown.? So that's that.?? Here is info on the new one:

Group Email Addresses
Club Treasury
There have been no significant changes to the treasury in the past month.? Details are in the Members section of the website.

I have received the DR2X from Yaesu.? I will likely get it swapped out with the old machine in the next two weeks.? You won't notice much difference, but initially I will have some voice announcements about nets and meetings/events in FM analog mode.

Sunday evenings at 8PM the repeater is usually linked up for the Southern Tier Fusion Net.? Digital only.? If you have a fusion radio, check-in and say hi.

Thanks for the update, I've been secluding myself the past 2-3 months prepping for my professional engineering licensure test, only to be notified that it has been cancelled due to COVID-precautions. You can expect to hear my voice on the VHF net again. Pete Fournia W2SKY is also working with me on my covert HF apartment antenna and just peer-pressured me into my first CW (and HF) QSO, so you might catch me on HF too! Can't wait for the fox hunt. See you all at the end if this craziness, and hope to hear you all in the meantime.?

Thursday Meeting

开云体育

I haven't had a chance to discuss this with the club board, but I'm trying to put something together for the meeting Thursday -?

A couple of things on tomorrow's meeting:
  • For this months special topic, I wanted to discuss FT8.? Being quite busy at work and home, I looked for some useful presentations and found one I hope to be perfect as a starting point.? So the special topic will be FT8 where I hope to have a virtual special guest.? Then maybe members who use FT8 can discuss their experiences with it.
  • ?To enable the previous bullet, does anyone have a good small audio setup or powered speakers we could use for taking PC audio? and amplifying?? I have some small PC powered speakers, but quality is not great.? If you have something that might work to put out decent audio in our meeting room, let me know.

A few people at last weeks meeting mentioned never working anything beyond the west coast going west.? The last few days, quite a few Japanese stations have been on FT8 between 5 and 6:30 PM local time.? I was able to work quite a few with my vertical.

I don't know if they are workable in other modes, but hopefully it will keep up.? Give it a listen if you haven't recently.

Before I take these working computers to Staples for recycling I wanted to check to see if anyone wanted them - pictures are attached.? The first is a working Gateway 15.6" laptop with an Intel i3 processor, 320 GB HD, 4 MG RAM, blueray disk drive and webcam.? It is running Windows 7 Home Premium and has MS Office installed.? It works fine but I don't need it.? The second is a Dell inspiron 530S tower only with Windows Vista 32bit OS, 3MB RAM, 1.6 Ghz dual core processor.? It works fine too.

Let me know if you have a good home for either of these working machines.? I will leave all the relevant software intact and delete the personal stuff.? If I don't hear from anyone soon I will offer it to other clubs.

I will take the laptop if it is not taken. That is if you don't mind my giving it to WA2MYF, a fellow ham friend of mine who could use it. He needs a bigger screen than the little Dell he has. He is not computer savvy but I would set it up for him. Thanks.
