Isn't the X.25 over serial nominally /synchronous/ serial?
I say nominally because there used to be an *EXPERIMENTAL* implementation of X.25 over /asynchronous/ serial, e.g. RS-232.
Sync and async are two different critters and not (directly) interoperable with each other.
