[WT] HELP: L6-226 starter not engaging

On my wagon I had this problem. It ended up being the brush plate was
90 degrees off, and this caused the starter to turn the wrong way, and
the bendix gear to freewheel.
Check the direction. Most engines are CCW I think, so your starter
should be that direction from the gear as well.

The starter on my '63 4WD PU would spin but apparently stopped
engaging. I could start the engine by popping the clutch while rolling
downhill... I pulled the starter out and the teeth on the starter and
ring gear are not stripped.
I purchased a rebuilt starter from Kaiser Willys and it does the same
thing. It appears to be identical as the original. I had a friend who
is a mechanic look at it, and after pulling it out, put jumper cables
on it. It spins fine but only seems to engage only about 1/4 to1/2
inch. He thought that the new one was defective, so Kaiser Willys was
nice enough to ship it back. They claim it is fine and that they sell
hundreds of starters. I reinstalled it when they sent it back, BUT
still does the same thing. Not sure what to do next. Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated!
