I purchased a rebuilt starter from Kaiser Willys and it does the same thing. It appears to be identical as the original. I had a friend who is a mechanic look at it, and after pulling it out, put jumper cables on it. It spins fine but only seems to engage only about 1/4 to1/2 inch. He thought that the new one was defective, so Kaiser Willys was nice enough to ship it back. They claim it is fine and that they sell hundreds of starters. I reinstalled it when they sent it back, BUT still does the same thing. Not sure what to do next. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Steve

I'm having the same problem on my 55 truck. It was
engaging fine, then stopped. Still spins like crazy.
I'd love to know what others think on this one.

Thanks
