Spare rack
Matt Phillimore
Anyone know where you can buy a spare tire rack for my 48 pickup? Or
IF you can buy them. I was considering just making one, but mine's been removed at some point, so I don't have one to take measurements from. If anyone could tell me where I might buy one, or could supply me with some measurements, I would be very appreciative. Matt |

If they are the same I will measure mine and give you a full discription, including materials list. Rick S |

it and was not bolted down. I used straps to tie it down for transport and figured I'd check this out later. Upon closer inspection, I have found that this bed is narrower and longer than the orginal bed and will not work on my PU without a lot of major modifications (the holes and mounts are not even close). Someone said that the bed I have is from a 60 something model. The tire mount seems to be the same for all years from what I can tell. Needless to say I am going to have to start over with the bed on my truck. I found an original bed with the Willys logo on the tailgate but its kind of beat up for the price they are asking. I may strat from scrach or do a flat bed. Rob Bost 51 4wd pu -----Original Message----- |

<< Ok, I could use some measurements, if anyone is willing to make a couple quick ones. I'm trying to figure out if the FC ones will work. NOthing too detailed is needed quite yet. I really just need to know how far out from the bed it is to the mounting surface. Matt, Sorry it took me so long to reply but I've been a little busy. I measured the distance from the bed to the outside edge of the tire carrier and it was 8 3/4". If your going to make a tire carrier, make sure that it has the proper clearance for whatever tires and rims you are running. My truck is running 235/75R15s and the tire clears ok but much larger and I would be rubbing on the fender and bed rail. I believe rim specification (backspacing) would be just as critical as the tire size. Sometime in the past the previous owner moved the tire carrier forward 1 1/2" and down 1 1/4". I think he did this so he would have better visibility over the tire through the side-view mirror. If you need more specific measurement let me know. I was thinking an old brake drum would be a good start for a homemade tire carrier. Rick S. PS. I use the tire carrier as a storage space for some tow cables. Coiled up they fit over the carrier and the tire holds them in place. |
