The slats were removed for improved air flow/cooling. Also notice the rigged
up coolant catch can that allow them to recover the water when it over heated.
Keeping the Jeeps cool and operating was essential so every bit of cooling
helped. The guy dressed for bad weather is David Stirling, founder of the
British SAS. It is my understanding that these guys are the basis of "Rat
Patrol". You're right about the shaving too, the British Army never would have
allowed that in regular conditions.

Now that's a cool picture! I wonder why the vertical slats on the grills look
to be chopped up? It does strike me as odd that the guys in the Jeeps looked
dressed for the desert but the feller standing up looks like he's ready for
cool rainy weather. And I never thought about it before, but I suppose the
water situation would tend to limit the number of shaves you'd get on patrol
in the desert too.
