Re: [WT] F134 Cooling Circuit

The engine should be able to idle in the drive with no problem. Is there a
radiator shroud in there?

My buddy who owns a local garage had a 180 and gave it to me to try.
It didn't open before the needle pegged. I then went to a Napa store
that is 5 minutes away and he had a 160 on his shelf. I installed it
and it opened pretty quickly. However, the needle did eventually peg
again. Keep in mind I'm not able to drive this unit yet on the road
and it is just idleing in the driveway. I'm not sure if this make a
difference or not.

Early this morning I removed the thermostat completely. After
running for about 10 minutes I could feel heat on the top of the
radiator so I knew water was circulating now. The needle on my
gauge
was about 3/4 of the way to hot and seemed to stay in that area.
I
understand that this is a relative position and may vary from
vehicle
to vehicle. I was able to hold on to the large hoses without
burning
my hand. I could keep my hand on the top of the radiator for
about
3
seconds before it became to hot. Is this about right? This isn't
overheating is it?

Thanks,

Also some people drill a small 1/16" to 1/8" hole in the
thermostat
flange.
This starts the flow and helps heat the thermostat.

Well, the thermostat was indeed installed upside down. I
corrected
it and started the engine. In about two minutes the engine
heated
again (the needle went to H on the gauge) and again the hose
from
the
thermostat was cool to touch while the others were too hot to
touch.
I probably need a new thermostat. What is the correct one and
can
they be purchased locally at NAPA or will I have to order one
from
a
jeep supply house?

Mine is stamped 192.

The thermostat fits into a thermostat retainer which fits in

The temperature sensor needs to be on the engine side. Some
times
there is a
small hole drilled in the flange.

At this time, the prime suspect is a failed or mis-
installed
thermostat. The heater hose getting hot demonstrates that
the
water
pump is
functioning, and that coolant is circulating.

I opened this valve and find the hose connected to get hot
fairly
quickly. I then felt the large hose going to the bottom
of
the
radiator and it too is hot. However, the large hose to
the
top
of
the radiator is cool. The gauge shows the engine getting
hot
in
only
a couple of minutes so I shut it down. Since this is the
first
time
I put coolant in it is there something I am missing?

Thanks,
John

On the rear of my engine is a water valve that directs
flow
to
the
heater in my cab. From the heater another hose runs to
the
water
pump.
I do not have my heater mounted yet but want to drive
my
truck. I
connected a single hose directly from the valve to the
water
pump. It
is necessary for this valve to be opened all the time
for
engine
cooling to take place? I'm not certain if they opened
in
the
winter
months and closed it completely during the hot summer
months
when
cab
heat was not needed. Would someone please educate me
on
this
matter.
I closed it completely and it seems my engine got hot
fast.

Thanks,
John
