How do you widen wheels? You take them to a wheel shop and pay $$$. The
wheels have to be pretty precise and I wouldn't try this at home. They'll
do
them however you want. When I was looking for rims I talked to a wheel
manufacturer that was willing to cut the center out of stock wheels and
put
them into a new outer ring. It was expensive. I didn't do it.
When I was a kid I worked in my Grandfather's tire shop. Wheels and tires
all over the place and not a lot of money. Reversed rims became popular at
the time (early 60's). We made our own. We'd drill out the welds holding
the center section in, pop the rim apart, and either put the original rim
on backwards or go for a wider Buick outer rim. Next we'd bolt them
together, check the alignment on a jig, and have them welded. Might be able
to do it on some of the newer wheels, too. A while back I had a '35 Nash
Victoria with possibilities of being modified. I found that the original 13
spoke stamped steel centers were the same diameter as Chevy Rally wheels.
Stock centers with 15" wide rims, nice touch.
