New Project: keyboard keyer

Here is a small project you might like:? a keyboard-to-Morse code interface.? I am working on the documentation now.

Project Description:?
Schematic:?
Builder's Guide:
User's Guide:
Source Code and PCB:?

I am still proofreading so I apologize in advance for any typos.? The source code and PCB gerbers are not yet public, but should be ready in a few days.

As always, your comments and suggestions are much appreciated.

Bruce

Here is a short video of the keyer in action:

Hi Bruce,
?
I follow your work with great admiration and interest. You do very good projects and you document them very well. I haven't been able to try your projects until now because I'm too busy with other subjects, but this keyboard keyer project can trigger me.
?
Have you ever thought about adding a "morse ( audio) decoder" to this project? With an audio input and screen printing of decoded morse signals, this project could become even more perfect.

Good morning Murat.

Morse decoders are fascinating,?aren't they?? I tried my hand at decoding with the Morse Tutor, which is able to decode your straight key input fairly well.? ?I was surprised?how well a simple decoding algorithm can do.? ?Of course, the goal in that case was to teach Morse Code. if your fist is sloppy, then bad decoding shows the user that they need to improve!? A goal of a real decoder is almost the opposite: provide good decoding in less-than-optimal conditions, adapting to the code speed, quality, and band conditions.

Designing a real decoder is challenging indeed!? ?It is beyond the scope of my little keyer.? ?But, it would make a good project on its own.? ?
Thanks for the great idea, Murat.? ?

I hope you get the opportunity to try the keyboard keyer.? It is a lot of fun.

Greetings,

Thank you Bruce W8BH, for sharing such a fun project with the World..

I recently built the Keyboard Keyer on a breadboard.
To do so, I needed to breadboard the PS/2 port.
My solution was to use some stripboard to make a BreakOut Board (BOB).
This is the diagram of the BOB I made:

This is what the actual breakout board looks like after soldering it together.

I superglued the FR4 sides of the stripboard together, lining up the holes.
For vias, I used pieces of resistor wire, bent in a U shape.
I soldered the free ends of the U first, then soldered the U side, then clipped off the U.
The support tabs on the PS/2 port hang over the edge and do not need to be soldered.

I was able to plug the BOB into the breadboard, then add the voltage divider resistors to the breadboard.

I soldered male headers on the OLED, so it fit on the breadboard.
Likewise for the XIAO.

Here is a short video clip of Step 3b of the Keyboard Keyer tutorial:

My eyes are not what they used to be, so I drew diagrams for the XIAO, OLED, and the Piezo.

Hopefully helpful.

Finally, here is a snapshot of the completed breadboard with the final KeyboardKeyer sketch uploaded.

It works as advertised.
This is a fun project to breadboard.
