Seattle Marathon Hams Needed
From Franz N3HFS: HAMS NEEDED! 2024 SEATTLE MARATHON SUN. DEC. 1st The 2024 Seattle Marathon returns to Seattle Center this year, once again on the Sunday after Thanksgiving - Sunday, December 1, 2024. The full marathon course this year runs exactly as it did last year - south through downtown streets to Columbia St., enters the the I-5 Express Lanes for a stretch to the north, then semi-circles the UW campus, continuing through Broadmoor, the Arboretum, and Interlaken Park before heading west to Gas Works Park and up Highway 99 to circle Green Lake before returning to Seattle Center. The marathon will need automobile and bicycle hams on the course, and a number of pedestrian hams at a relatively few key locations on the course I will also need pedestrian/seated-position hams at the Seattle Center complex for VRA (SAG vehicle reception) and start/finish/medical areas. Hams that can operate at certain positions alongside their non-ham family or friends may also volunteer, since help that does not require radio operation may be wanted at the VRA and some on-course locations. Please keep in mind that field operating positions at the Marathon are typically outdoors and therefore can be cold and/or wet, and may in a few cases require some hours without access to "personal relief" facilities. You can certainly bring a folding chair or other comforts, but it must be able to be carried to your location. You should be prepared to bring food and beverage for yourself as well. The full marathon starts at 7am, and the half-marathon at 7:30am, so positions at Seattle Center and earlier in the course will be staffed by 6am-7am. Some positions further along the course will need to be staffed beginning at 8-9am. I am accepting volunteer sign-ups for the Seattle Marathon on the Sunday following Thanksgiving - December 1, 2024. Volunteers may now sign up by contacting me at n3hfs@... Please send me the following information if you are ready to volunteer: Full name (first and last; preferred nickname in quotes) Ham radio call sign Email address Home address Mobile (cell) telephone number to be used at the event Emergency contact: name, relationship, and phone number Any notes regarding position types you would like, or have experience with (SAG vehicle, pedestrian, VRA, etc.) or other information (physical limitations, etc.) Naturally, you may email me with questions about assignments or volunteering, or whatever is on your mind regarding this event. Thank you! -Franz Niedermeyer, N3HFS 717-379-0892 cell/text -- Nick Gerner, KK7LZM VP, West Seattle Amateur Radio Club https://w7aw.org https://w7aw.groups.io

2025 Club Events We're populating 2025 club meeting topics. This year we had a number of speakers and field events. We already have our March meeting booked: we're hosting Ham Connect where we'll speak to new hams. If you have other ideas reach out to VP Nick kk7lzm@.... Ham Challenge 2025 https://hamchallenge.org/ These are 52 challenges to consider tackling in 2025, one per week. This might be a great way to deepen your connection to amateur radio. WSARC Holiday Brunch December 21 9:30a at the Salvation Army White Center During the regular club meeting time we'll have a holiday brunch. Bring your family and a dish to pass. Don't worry about what to bring, it'll all work out and everyone will appreciate it! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone's family. We'll have door prizes! Annual Meeting 7:00PM on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Angelo's in Burien Like we did earlier this year, we'll have a club dinner at Angelo's in January instead of a January club meeting. This will be the annual meeting where we will hold board elections. Members are responsible for paying for their own food and drink. Cindi has graciously offered to organize a white elephant gift exchange for the annual meeting. So get a gift, ideally radio related for ~$25 or less and we'll have some fun swapping gifts. WSARC Board Elections Positions up for election are President, Treasurer, Quartermaster, Board Positions 1 and 3. We have candidates for the two board positions: Ron N4RDZ and Frank K7RSD. We also have potential candidates for Treasurer and to fill the still open Secretary position. We're still looking for a President candidate. We'll update everyone once the candidate slate is confirmed. If you are interested reach out to President Jonathan kk7pw@... Repeater Roundabout The weekend of November 23 and 24 https://www.repeaterroundabout.com/ The Repeater Roundabout is a weekend-long event held on many of your local repeaters. The goal is to meet new people and work repeaters you might not usually key up. It’s also a great way to get started with ham radio contests for folk who are primarily repeater users. Last year Quentin of PSRG wrote an article for QST about this Pacific North West regional event. WSARC Badges Ken AB7X has graciously re-upped his supplies for making members club badges. Every club member is entitled to one of these badges. So if you need one contact Ken at seattlemuscguy48@... and he'll make you one. 10m Gathering 28.420MHz 8:00pm every Monday Night Join an informal gathering of club members and others around the world for chit-chat, trivia and swapping bad jokes. 2024-11-16 WSARC Club Meeting Notes
Agenda: Board elections Ham Huddle Annual Meeting Holiday Party 2025 Club Meeting Topic Brainstorm Board Elections: Elections will take place at the annual meeting in January. This will replace the regular club meeting. At today's meeting we'd like to discuss how to fill these positions. We want to have the slate of candidates lined up well before the election. Jonathan notes that as a minimum we need to fill the president and the secretary positions to stay in good standing as a non-profit. More than just coming up with candidates for this election, Jonathan would like us to have a plan or process to fill these positions in the future. Rita, Mei, Nancy and Nick have all worked on ideas on membership recruiting and outreach, including how to include members who might not otherwise be active. Rita is working on a monthly newsletter. We also have other activities including the elmers breakfast, field activities at parks and our regular club meetings. So having a good agenda lined up for club meetings is pretty important. Positions up for election: President: Treasurer: Jose KK7GDE maybe interested in this position Board Position 1: Frank McJunckins KS7RSD nominated by Ron N4RDZ Board Position 3: Ron Zuber N4RDZ nominated by Cindi KD7KSH Quartermaster: Secretary: not actually up for election, but open from prior election. Rita KK7POO may be interested in this position for remaining year. Ken AB7X points out the bylaws only require 2 board meetings per year. This year we did 4, but that's just a goal. He also suggested eliminating or consolidating positions. Cindi and Alan suggested just leaving them open because amending the constitution is a big effort. Nancy points out it's unclear what the requirements/expectations are of the board. So we spent some time discussing that: Positions are formally defined in the bylaws. But generally: President: preside over meetings. Approve arrangements with other groups (e.g. ACS, PSRG). Mediator of issues and recipient of observations and ideas. Velcro for all kinds of things. Distributes and delegates tasks, encouraging participation. Handle inbound contacts to the club (that aren't handled by others, see below) especially equipment donations (in partnership with Quartermaster and others). Prepare for succession for President position and board in general. The president is a signatory on the bank account. VP: Backup for president. Arrange program/agenda for all club events (including board meetings). Notify membership of time/place events. Handling membership list and communication for new and renewing members. Secretary: Take and maintain board meeting notes. Handle official correspondence on behalf of the club including reports/returns with IRS and WA state. Work with treasurer to prepare these materials. Also maintain the insurance. In general maintain the archives for the club. Send thank you notes to people that make donations to the club. Treasurer: Keep track of all funds and property. Signatory on bank account. Maintain cards/checks for that bank account. Manage financial relationships with other organizations (e.g. running Field Day with PSRG/ACS) Board of directors (including the above officers and the board positions 1-3): long term club planning. appointing the license trustee, authorize club expenditures, appointing committees for projects, reserving space in board meetings for general member action items or complaints. Follow up with board communications, including board meeting notifications and information Training Officer: runs classes and exams with support from the club including $200 for refreshments and reimbursement of any related expenses. Quartermaster: manage club assets including loans, gifts, sales, working with treasurer to hand off related money and tax letters for donors. Maintaining an inventory and making this available to members. Jonathan notes that each position is responsible that these things get done, but not necessarily for doing all of these things by themselves. They can delegate these functions as long as they stay responsible for these things g

2024 Q4 WSARC Board Meeting We had our final board meeting of the year yesterday. Topics included the upcoming board elections, the annual meeting and topics for club meetings in 2025. You can find materials and notes here: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1OTLwzQjtbTvbRcXHdE3lDne_Y9N0IO7q West Seattle Amateur Radio Club Board Elections Board elections are coming up at our annual meeting in January. We have a number of positions up for election: President, Treasurer, Quartermaster, Board Position 1, Board Position 3. And the secretary position is still open since elections at the start of this year. The following people will not run for re-election. So thank you to our president Jonathan, treasurer Greg, board position 1 Jon, board position 3 Michelle for your service. Club Meeting This Saturday Salvation Army White Center, Saturday November 16, meeting starts at 10a, people start gathering at 9:30 for socializing We'll discuss the upcoming board elections. We'll also discuss topics for club meetings next year. For inspiration consider chapters from the Technician Licensing manual as a place to start. Maybe we can find experts to speak on topics relating to those chapters. Cindi KD7KSH has also offered to give the ACS presentation on the recent hurricanes. That should be great content. Thank you Cindi! Allstar Echolink Back Online Tom N7OEP, Doug KD7DK, Nick KK7LZM went to the West Seattle radio tower at Highpoint to troubleshoot our HamWAN connection. It turned out our connection to Beacon Tower went down and our backup connection to Haystack did not kick in. We got that Haystack connection up and running and fixed a few other configuration issues and things are back up. We're still looking into what happened with the Beacon Tower connection. Save Wisdom https://savewisdom.org/ While not specifically ham radio related, Jonathan suggests dropping by this website and sharing some of the lessons you've learned in life with others. Dave AA7XX reminds us that whatever happens in this world we have each other, our families and our family in the club.

WSARC Q4 Board Meeting Sunday Nov 10, 10am by Zoom (link on the club calendar) We moved the Q4 board meeting from last weekend to this coming weekend. Board materials are in Google Workspace and were shared via email and w7aw.groups.io last weekend. Upcoming Board Elections At the annual meeting (scheduling TBD) we will elect board officers. Positions up for election are: President, Treasurer, Board Position 1, Board Position 3, Quartermaster. We also have an open Secretary position which was never filled at the end of last year.
