Effective today I resign the post of Quartermaster. I am also withdrawing my participation in the club. Recent events have brought to my attention that there are some probably unfixable social situations with which I am not comfortable. "The board" has had some recent difficulties. Perhaps that may resolve, perhaps not. Troubles extend beyond that. The underlying difficulty seems to be with several individuals practicing "covert hostility". Within the last few weeks I have been the recipient of what I would describe as "shadow shunning" by 3 different individuals. This is consistent with "covert hostility" as such tend to gossip or backchannel. I prefer to not play anymore. 73, John Kimball KF7AZP

Classes and Testing Sessions Coming Up May 30 - June 14 Tech Class June 13 - June 29 General Class June 14 Technician Test June 29 General Class https://w7aw.org/education/fcc-amateur-radio-classes/ Dave AA7XX and Alan WX7L We're preparing for licensing classes. Visit the website for more information. Following the classes we'll be running tests which are open to anyone, including those that do not take the class. Providence Mount St. Vincent is very interested in sending some of their staff to take our classes and help out with the club! Great contact Cindi KD7KSH. Park Operations for April Club Meeting 10a April 19 at Lincoln Park Shelter #4 Bring a radio and let's operate from the park! Nick KK7LZM will bring his shack-in-a-box and set it up for HF operations. We hope you'll bring your go kit or QRP radio. Hopefully we'll also have some foxhunting gear to do play a radio direction finding game. We'll also be hosting a young person and their mother who want to learn more about amateur radio. I hope everyone can make it and give them a warm welcome. This won't technically be a POTA activation which only includes state and national parks. But that won't stop us from making some park contacts! We'll have coffee and some light refreshments. Feel free to bring some of your own food to share. WSARC Entry in the West Seattle Grand Parade? Melinda KK7YVK, Mei KI7TZA and others are trying to organize a club entry in the West Seattle Grand Parade. We'll be discussing options after the club meeting April 19. New Club Logo at Seattle ACS Over the weekend Ron N4RDZ presented on behalf of the club at the Seattle ACS meeting. He showed off the newly approved club logo. We got a lot of positive comments from club members and outsiders alike. Great job everyone that worked on it and gave input. It was a long road with a lot of iterations and a real team effort. Thanks especially to Mac KK7UMB our artist in the middle of exams! Good luck! AREDN Exercise in the next few weeks As part of the prep for our still in-progress ARDC grant proposal, we're going to have an exercise deploying and using some AREDN and LoRa mesh equipment in the next few weeks. If you're interested in participating in this exercise or the project as a whole visit nwmesh.groups.io and post your information. Seattle Field Day Keep the weekend of June 28 open! The club, along with several other groups in the area will be putting on a big show at South Seattle College. Keep your eyes peeled for information and calls for speakers and volunteers. I suspect information will appear at the Seattle Radio Field Day website soon. 10m Gathering Every Monday night 8pm 28.420MHz As usually we'll have a social chit chat later in the night after the Monday Night Net. It's a pretty low key way to do some HF work.

Some time ago I got a TP Link CPE 210 transceiver and loaded it with Aredn software for the mesh network. It has directional 9db antennas, but couldn't quite get enough signal to stably connect to W7AW at Highpoint, so I set it aside for a while. Prior to the CPE 210 I had hoped to find a unit that replaced the LNA from an unused digital satellite dish. Found a freebie dish which also sat around for a while. With some woodworking, blacksmithing and microwave engineering I came up with: Initial tests showed a good connection with W7AW, so I mounted it on the shack: Still looking pretty good: ...can see "hidden" units for Ron and Greg as well as SSC node. Currently running it on shore power...migrating to 24V converted from 12V, solar charged. Also need to add local distribution wifi. So, maybe soon should have a stable mesh node here. 73, John

Dave and Mei and the Washington State Science Fair Dave AA7XX is an organizer of the WS Science Fair. Mei KI7TZA is a judge this year. Dave says Mei did a fabulous job and was great engaging with the kids. There were a number of amateur radio operators at ths fair this year, as always. In fact, that's how Dave got into amateur radio many years ago. Thanks Dave and Mei for your service! Mei suggested the club run a table at the event next year. If you're interested in leading such an effort, I'm sure plenty of folks will support you! Upcoming Licensing Classes Dave AA7XX is thinking about running licensing classes at the end of May or beginning of June. He needs to find a place to run the exams. More information to follow. Seattle Radio Field Day Brian KG7WRK told us that he and others kicked off planning for this year's Field Day. They will need volunteers and speakers. So keep an eye out for more information. This is a fantastic event to learn more about radio by helping to build and run some fo the equipment. ARDC Grant Proposal Submitted https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UwiUQfk0x8mEyQ5zMkjhILNfzB0wgr7mk1jCo4cMPcs/edit?usp=sharing Nick KK7LZM, Ron N4RDZ, Frank K7RSD, Matt KK7BAS, Jim WS7JIM and Cindi KD7KSH and others have been working working on a grant proposal to ARDC to fund mesh equipment to support events like the West Seattle Grand Parade and Seattle Emergency Hubs. We submitted that today. Take a look at the proposal. It can take several months for the grant committee to finish reviewing proposals. We will keep you updated as that proceeds. Join the NWMesh meetings (info on the club calendar) to participate. We will need help! AREDN Equipment Retrieved from Center For Active Living Jim WS7JIM and Nick KK7LZM retrieved an AREDN node we had at the Center for Active Living. That building is surrounded by taller buildings which is not the best for an AREDN site. Jim has suggested relocating that equipment to the Eagle Hall up the street which should have good visibility up and down California. Join the NWMesh meetings to participate. Lincoln Park April Club Meeting 10a April 19, Lincoln Park Shelter #4 The next club meeting is on April 19 and will be a park operation at Lincoln Park. We'll have a radio fox hunt and operating radio stations. So bring your go box or QRP rig or whatever you've got. We will have a special guest: a youth interested in getting a license and their mom. We could use everyone's friendly, welcoming participation. There will be coffee and some refreshments. If you'd like to bring something, please do. Fruit, pastries, a brunch dish to share, whatever you like would all be appreciated. Baofeng K6 and Chirp Jonathan KK7PW told us that the Baofeng K6 tri-bander is now supported by the radio memory programming software CHIRP. Brian KG7WRK noted that the Icom ICT10 is also now supported. 10m Gathering Monday nights 8pm at 28.420Mhz USB Anyone with a technician license and above is welcome to join folks for an informal gathering on 10m. We're at the height of the sunspot cycle so now is a great time to try out HF. Jonathan was able to work a station with 100watts in Casa Blanca just recently in the evening. So join the gathering and we might have unexpected visitors from around the globe. Today is transgender visibility day WSARC is an inclusive club welcoming anyone to share your interest in amateur radio, community service and just good company.

Club Board Meeting Last Saturday Budget: the board discussed potentially raising dues and/or asking for donations. We didn't pass any motion at this point, but will further discuss this. Seven Standing comittees we've seen at recent meetings were approved. We hope you'll consider joining a comittee to help the club by contacting a board member. ARDC Grant Proposal to support West Seattle Grand Parade NWMesh would like to support the West Seattle Grand Parade with AREDN and meshtastic technology. We hope to track some of the parade units as they progress down California Ave and show this on a big screen TV. We might also include some video cameras and IP phones. In addition to the regular NWMesh folks, Ken AB7X and Brian KG7WRK are going to help out with some expertise and equipment. Repeater News We got a great deal on a Motorola Quantar repeater to replace one of the club repeaters. Tom N7OEP is working on programming that repeater. He will possibly this weekend do the repeater swap. He's already got a couple of volunteers. Other interested folks should contact Tom if they want to participate.

Dan K7SS ran QRP through tough conditions and managed to work 80 countries. Jonathan also managed to work 80 countries. Jonathan KK7PW also recently got an award for the World Wide DX Contest SSB High-Power. He came in #1 in 7-land, #7 in North America and #34 World-wide! What an achievement. 1st Edition of the Club's Monthly Newsletter Check your club email or the attachment to this posting Thanks to Rita for putting together the first edition of a newsletter for our club. Take a look, she's got a lot of great information for all of us. Thank you! Club Meeting Feb 15: Club Organization, Participation and Leadership planning Feb 15, 9:30a for socializing, 10:00a for the start of the meeting Salvation Army White Center I hope you'll join us on Feb 15 for our first club meeting of the year. We'll use this time to help plan out how our club will work in 2025. Our president, Alan WX7L, would like to discuss comittees, member participation and leadership planning. Alan proposes 7 comittees. We have a number of other discussion items including the possibly updating the club logo, print materials and merch for the club, planning for the WWARA Narrowband repeater migration, having a table a the upcoming Mike & Key Swap Meet, creating an equipment lending library, and more. I beleive this will be an important meeting which might determine how the club operates and what kind of programming we offer throughout 2025. Club Meeting March 15: MST Winlink Clinic and HamConnect March 15, 9:30a for Winlink 10:30a for HamConnect Salvation Army White Center In partnership with our friends at Western Washington Medical Services Team we're hosting a Winlink clinic to learn how we can help support our local healthcare system in times of emergency. What kind of Winlink content and activities would you like to see? Dan Hoke of MST is looking for suggestions to tailor the workshop to what you'd like to learn about. He suggests including peer-to-peer or postoffice Winlink features. We are looking for Winlink elmers to help out during the clinic. So even if you're already familiar with Winlink, this should be a great meeting to learn and to teach. Following that workshop we'll co-host HamConnect, a partnership of regional Amateur Radio clubs as each participating club presents their organization to newly licensed and prospective hams. This is our chance to show newcomers who we each are and how they can participate in the community. As always, details on all club events are on the club calendar. It sounds like a few hours of volunteering on Friday, March 7 or Saturday March 8 gets you free admission. If have folks interested in going to the event, perhaps we can organize a carpool. It's a bit of a drive with sometimes tricky parking, so taking fewer vehicles probably makes sense. I won't be able to attend this year, but I'd like to encourage folks that do go to take a club photo together and share that back with the rest of us. Maybe we can post that to the website to share with everyone. ARRL Scholarship Fund for Hams in college to help support their studies. Lauren K7LRN and Mac KK7UMB have both applied. This is part of what your ARRL membership dues go to support. Eric W7FCL wants to remind us of that important work many of us are supporting. If you're not an ARRL member, you can join today: https://www.arrl.org/membership WSARC Club Age Ken AB7X and Frank NA7O remind us that during the depression W7AW didn't have enough money to keep the club going, so the current records at ARRL actually underestimate the club's actual age. Eric W7FCL is willing to do some research on the topic if anyone has anything to share. February Club Meeting: club participation, leadership planning and club meeting format Feb 15, 9:30a at the Salvation Army White Center https://w7aw.org/calendar/ Our president Alan, WX7L, would like to use the February club meeting to discuss organizing comittees to help organize club activities and planning for future leadership in the club. We'd love to have your participation in this discussion and perhaps your help volunteering to help organize things. In addition to those topics, we have a set of discussion items related to club activities including planning for club print materials (like business cards), potentially updating the club logo, having a table at the upcoming Mike and Key Swap Meet, and creating a club inventory lending library. I hope we'll get to hear your ideas relating to these topics and more. Our president Alan, WX7L, has a proposal to change the venue and format for future club meetings to present. I hope we'll get your input and feedback. This is something we can discuss at the February club meeting. Related, I'm preparing a list of future club meeting activities. In March we'll be running a Winlink workshop with the Western Washington Medical Services Team (MST0 and we'll host Ham Connect, a regional partnership of radio groups presenting each of our organizations to newly licensed hams. In April Alan and I discussed having a field activity, perhaps at Lincoln Park as we did last year. If you have ideas, please share them with me. Google Workspace Just a reminder that we get the workspace for free because of our 501(3)c status. We're lucky to have that. There are many tools and apps we get access to, including "Google Meet" a video conferencing app, spreadsheets, docs, etc. If you need some help, feel free to ask for help, maybe by replying to this message. We have a lot of smart technical people that can give you a hand.
