Re: Any interest in adding support for other DV modes?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýTim, I have already been looking into how to get usage data of our current DStar repeater.? The current software captures callsigns and time of start of transmission, but I hope to find a way to get minutes/week or month? of local incoming DStar transmissions.? Ideally it would be nice to add in minutes of TX repeat by local RF hams.? Since we also carry a few nets coming in via the internet, we may have some users who listen but don¡¯t transmit during those nets, but it is not possible to know that. Yes, multi-mode repeaters, when idle, listen for all enabled modes.? Once a given mode is heard, the repeater retransmits that transmission using the same mode, then waits.? That hang-time is adjustable, but usually the system waits a bit longer for the mode that just transmitted before going back to listening for all modes.? So an active QSO in a given mode is likely able to continue until the users sign off, rather than another mode interrupting and taking over the repeater. The trick, as I understand it from people who have multi-mode repeaters, is to encourage RF users to look at their radio before their first transmission, in case the repeater is busy with another mode.? Apparently people get used to doing that quick visual check and there is rarely a conflict. A common technique when the repeater will carry a net in a given mode is to switch the system to single-mode during that net.? That prevents a local user on a different mode from interrupting the net.? After the net, the repeater is returned to multi-mode automatically. ??? Hello Mike: Neither NorCal DMR or BrandMeister has anything to do with the decision to move the W6CX D-Star repeater to a ¡°full service¡± Digital repeater. The only issue is that it stays Narrowband in order to keep the NCDCC Coordination. My best guess is MDARC should look to see how much D-Star traffic is using the W6CX D-Dtar Repeater and make the decision based on a usage study. As I understand the ¡°multi-mode¡± model, it can only use one mode at a time. Originally via K6MDD and then switching to a Shark openSPOT which gives me more reliable DV coverage here in east county. I also use the openSPOT for System Fusion via my FT-991 as there are no C4FM repeaters available in our area. I for one would definitely like to see another DV ¡°full service¡± repeater on the mountain. I don¡¯t have any experience using our current North Peak machines from south county, but I have heard a number of complaints from those in the shadow of the main Mt. Diablo peak. Having said that, I think it would also be prudent to include DMR in the mix on South Peak, as those wishing to use DMR in south county surely have? more trouble with K6MDD than I out here in God¡¯s country. If we have the funding and the go ahead from Brandmeister, NORCAL-DMR and/or C-Bridge, I say GO FOR IT. I personally would love to talk with more NORCAL HAMS! 73 Mike W6MEW ? Our current repeater was set up in 2012 and consists of ICOM radios, an ICOM controller and an intel PC running ICOM gateway software.
