Re: RECOMMEND SUSPEND WINLINK HF and CMS (Telnet/internet) until MILTON hurricane passes.

Josh,?good question, as the internet backend dependency is somewhat transparent to the winlink client user. See architecture diagram attached and page 2 on the linked presentation.
?
Email from your ISP (.gmail.com) to a winlink.org email address (n4txx@...) and vice versa will traverse the internet via CMS backbone. The RMS gateway will connect to CMS to transfer those messages to/from your winlink express client.

When using TELNET on winlink express or another client such as the RADIOMAIL iphone app, you are connecting to the CMS backbone hosted on Amazon AWS. You can see this in the connection log.
?
As for P2P, I¡¯ve only used this winlink express mode on RACES HF exercises (which is now cancelled for this weekend).
?
You can view everyones winlink PUBLIC and EMCOMM email traversing CMS on
?
Link to the Winlink presentation with the architecture diagram.

Hope this helps, RICK.

Re: RECOMMEND SUSPEND WINLINK HF and CMS (Telnet/internet) until MILTON hurricane passes.

Without a doubt, this is the best action. ?Please suspend any HF Winlink operations unless asked to operate in official capacity or until advised by state officials to resume normal operations.?

Please continue use of VHF/UHF packet and VARA transmissions as you normally do!

Thanks to all and pray for those in the path of the storm.

Thanks Rick for bringing this to our attention!

RECOMMEND SUSPEND WINLINK HF and CMS (Telnet/internet) until MILTON hurricane passes.

TX RACES has asked that routine WINLINK HF RMS gateway and TELNET (CMS backend) use be suspended until after Hurricane Milton passes. This will reduce the potential for interference to HF winlink operations in Florida, as well as the Amazon hosted CMS backend that handles winlink telnet and email message transfer.
?
VHF/UHF P2P winlink use is ok, however this mode is not likely used by club members nor the club RMS gateways. Russ can confirm.

Edited

Stephen, links below to a CHIRP .img file for GMRS, MURS and NOAA. Associated .CSV file export if needed. This is an extract from my Baofeng HT's master CHIRP file.
?
You'll notice TWO GMRS channels programmed for the Montgomery and Conroe repeaters I'm aware of. I don't know of any GMRS repeaters in Walker Co. Although at the last club meeting, Glenn mentioned that a GMRS repeater is being planned for the club's repeater site.
?
I use CHIRP exclusively for all of my analog HT's. I rarely use the customer programming software (CPS) from the radio manufacture. Using CHIRP allows me to copy/paste channels among my various analog HT's from TIDRADIO, BTECH and Baofeng to keep them in sync.
?
My HT's are 'unlocked' so I can load police/fire/ems, NOAA, GMRS/FRS and MURS as well as HAM bands.

New to GMRS as it uses channels. I have the programming cable and use the Radioty software to program. Will need instructions how to program my pair of Baofeng GMRS radios.

Another hurricane for Florida's west coast?

For the last several days the NHC has been watching a disturbed area in the southwestern Caribbean generally associated with the seasonal central American gyre.? While there is a 40% chance that this area will develop into a tropical system over the next seven days, all of the major models are in agreement that whatever happens to develop, once in the Gulf of Mexico, will slowly move toward the west coast of Florida and at least two of the most reliable models are forecasting a significant hurricane.? While there is high model agreement on a Florida landfall, which is? unusual this far out in time, the date spread in the models ranges from October 7-11.

The chance of whatever develops affecting the Texas coast are low and the climatology record shows that late September and October tropical systems recurve more sharply in the Gulf and rarely reach the coast west of the Mississippi River.? However, if I lived in Florida, I would be quite concerned.

Re: FCC License Renewal Tip (from SADRC)

These instructions are good but I also advise a search on YouTube for pertinent videos. I had to go through this when I added my GMRS license at the FCC website. You are correct in your assessment. It is not a user friendly process.
