When the current is cut off the coil will create a large reverse voltage spike, which can damage the transistor driving it. The diode provides a route directly between to the two ends of the coil

On the four engine have you checked the spacing on the wheels
I had an engine that short circuit on a turnout with a powered frog and it was the wheel out of alignment
