For what it is worth, the Amarillo Railroad Museum uses 22 gauge stranded soldered every three feet as practical using a Weller soldering iron with a small, pointed tip. We tin the rail and wire first, then make to joint. This procedure produces small and secure joints. We used either brush on liquid or paste rosin flux. Our "oldest" joints are over 10 years old.
