We’ll be having another Fox Hunt next Sunday, December 3rd at 2:30. Same rules apply as last time. It’ll take place inside the city limits of West Plains. You start wherever you want and we’ll all end at the same spot wherever the fox is located. JJ will be the hunt master. Check in on the 444.425 repeater so we have a rough idea of who we’re competing with.?

Am I the last one to find this?
As a for instance, I chose transmitter kits, and then "Two Tinned Tunas (EZ Build)" Price: $30.00 This looks like a $30 kit that any one of us could put together even if just for soldering practice. Then we can take a stab at understanding what the radio is doing from the schematic While I can't (yet) speak definitively to a transmit frequency, I think we are looking at our next fox. Problems to solve: ?- define xmit frequency ?- define xmit power ?- automate call sign propagation ?- weatherproofing They are so many projects here, one of them may have solved all this and be a fox right out of the can. Antenna Theory
Craig (AE0WA) passed along the following video for everyone. He and I worked for a while one day to tune an end-fed quarter wave and it seemed like we just kept bending it back to get it where we wanted it to resonate. Way more than we expected. We should have watched this first. It makes a little more sense now.? ? |
Nixa ARC NARCfest Saturday November 11, 8:00am
The message below is forwarded from James Adkins about their annual Nixa Ham Fest. They’ll have lots of give-aways, several vendors, and many individuals on site selling equipment. James and Dave’s preventions alone are probably worth the trip. All proceeds support the Southwest Missouri Linked Repeater System which is comprised of 13 (maybe 14?) repeaters across Southwest Missouri that are RF linked and have emergency generators. Site locations on our side of the state include Willow Springs, Ben Davis, Rolla, and Taum Sauk. With a good mobile radio and antenna, there aren’t many places between here and Oklahoma you can get into the system. If you have questions, let me know. I always enjoy attending and meeting fellow hams in the region. Occasionally, I arrive early enough to get a bargain!

Re: Great Fox Hunt!
One tool I used in the fox hunt Saturday was my TinySA. It’s a spectrum analyzer about the size of a NanoVNA if you’re familiar with those. In the attached picture, I’m monitoring a chunk of spectrum from 130mhz to 160mhz, Which would place the 144.300 mhz fox signal near the middle. Notice the strong signal… -23.7 dBm at 144.68mhz. This is my portable radio set at 1 watt, transmitting from the other end of the couch. If the signal is that strong, you’re pretty close.

So who won??

JJ already mentioned as much on Facebook, but we had a great time with our foxhunt today! JJ and Mike beat me to the park by a little bit and the three of us (plus my 15 year old son) all ended up in the same spot looking for a well hidden transmitter. (Kudos Sierena) I’m not sure how long the 3 of us trampled the weeds in the same area, but we knew we had to be right on top of it….. and we were! Not sure how we didn’t step on it!?
