P.S. I think we've solved the mystery of "Snob

certain we've actually identified the actual house
in the picture. I
know the picture is tiny, but Hughes House appears
to have different
architecture.

P.P.S. Thanks for the correction on the Grotto (see

Re: Hidden House/Bookmans

Bookman's took over the building that surrounded "The Hidden House",
long after the house in the middle of the "U" shaped building that gave
the ice cream parlor it name was demolished. Jim

Are they coming as attachments in the email? If so, I'm not getting them.

Re: Snob Hollow

I was just playing around on-line and you're right, the area around the
Manning House, etc. is the Snob Hollow area.

They say it is the neighborhood where you take Oracle Rd. south where

toward the TCC/Downtown, till Alameda, and possibly to Congress.
Those
old well built homes for those few blocks. I think some are law
offices
now, and some home were taken down for parking garages. Is this the
same area where the bones were recently uncovered?
Not sure if this is the same 'Snob Hollow' as in the picture. But it
is
still for some. What year is the picture?
Hope you are all having a good day!

Re: Mystery Picture - where was/is "Snob Hollow" ???

This looks like the area around El Con Mall. When I was growing up in
the late 50s, early60s, we always referred to that area of homes as
the "rich man's area." Not many people were up in the foothills yet.

P.S. Re: Previous mystery picture "The Grotto"... I thought the

Re: Plane crash?

Wow, thanks for sharing your story! That's amazing.

I happen to live in the fight path. It's not the noise so much that bothers me, it's the jet fuel that must come raining down on my house several times a day since they fly so low overhead.

I used to live on the south side, and moved the to the east side to get away from the planes. Then they started to fly over my house several times a day within the past couple years. So they keep following me! haha.

My mother was present at the Food Giant when the plane crashed.

I was living in Milwaukee at the time, saw the reports on the crash on
the national news and called my mother immediately.

At the time, she lived on Palo Verde and did most of her shopping at the
Food Giant. Back in those days there were "carryout boys" and if your
groceries were carried out to the car they expected a tip. Now my mother
was perfectly able to carry her own groceries but, being a long-time
teacher in TUSD, she had a soft spot in her heart for these boys. So,
she would usually take "a quarter" out of her purse to give to the
selected carryout boy.

She said when she was shopping that day she only had a few bags and was
almost going to skip having them carried out. But she said something
inside made her change her mind and she told the boy to carry out her bags.

As the bags were being loaded into the car, the plane crashed into the
grocery.

My mother calmly got into her car and drove home. I told her to call D-M
in case they wanted to interview her about the crash but I don't think
she ever did.

I always thought ... "there by the grace of God" ... if my mother hadn't
had that sense that she should have the boy carry out her groceries
chances are he would have been inside the market and killed, as the
others were.

My mother lived to be almost 92 years old and I hope the carryout boy
went on to have a wonderful life as well.

One of the things I missed about Tucson was hearing the jets (we lived
under the flight path). Thus I don't really have any sympathy for those
who complain about the noise. To me the jets are the sound of freedom.
With all the hazards of today's life, a jet crash is among the least of
my worries.
