My mother was present at the Food Giant when the plane crashed.
I was living in Milwaukee at the time, saw the reports on the crash on the national news and called my mother immediately.
At the time, she lived on Palo Verde and did most of her shopping at the Food Giant. Back in those days there were "carryout boys" and if your groceries were carried out to the car they expected a tip. Now my mother was perfectly able to carry her own groceries but, being a long-time teacher in TUSD, she had a soft spot in her heart for these boys. So, she would usually take "a quarter" out of her purse to give to the selected carryout boy.
She said when she was shopping that day she only had a few bags and was almost going to skip having them carried out. But she said something inside made her change her mind and she told the boy to carry out her bags.
As the bags were being loaded into the car, the plane crashed into the grocery.
My mother calmly got into her car and drove home. I told her to call D-M in case they wanted to interview her about the crash but I don't think she ever did.
I always thought ... "there by the grace of God" ... if my mother hadn't had that sense that she should have the boy carry out her groceries chances are he would have been inside the market and killed, as the others were.
My mother lived to be almost 92 years old and I hope the carryout boy went on to have a wonderful life as well.
One of the things I missed about Tucson was hearing the jets (we lived under the flight path). Thus I don't really have any sympathy for those who complain about the noise. To me the jets are the sound of freedom. With all the hazards of today's life, a jet crash is among the least of my worries.

Sorry, no prizes to the "winners".

Re: "The Illegals" (street racing)...
I'm dating myself, but the illegals I attended in the 1950s
were held on the Mt. Lemmon highway, just at the base of the
mountain...........the starting line faced south. That was so we could see the
cops coming and everyone would scatter into the desert.
?
A legal strip was started on Davis Monthan Air Force Base in
the late 50s and early 60s.......an unused runway was "donated" to the
drags.

many of you remember the "Hidden House" Ice Cream Shop? It was on the
north-east corner of Broadway and Tucson Blvd and actully was a house
hidden in the center of a "U"-shaped building around it. Summertime when I
was? kid riding my bike around town I used to stop there for a

When I was in high school, in the 80's, the illegals were "the end of Speedway" to the east and south of town, around Wilmot and the prison.

I remember your face (I just looked you up in the 86 yearbook). I knew Tricia because I knew a lot of the chorus people. She's really nice. I think she used to work around here too because I saw her a while back.
Well, it's great to talk to another Sunnysider! Have you seen how much they've changed the campus? I recently went into the auditorium and luckily it hadn't changed at all - still the same, and still huge.

Hi Everyone!
I'm a Tucson native (more or less, born in Nogales ) and got to enjoy Tucson growing up in the 70's and 80's. I was (and still am) a serious drive-in patron - guilty of cramming people into the trunk - especially at the Apache Drive-In, the De Anza., and the Tucson Drive-In (movies were always interrupted by a rattling train). And yes, often, we'd have a bag of Pat's chili-dogs or from Shari 's Drive-in (still around!)
I remember a Rodeo or Fiesta Drive-in, but I think they played Mexican movies that were, ugh, raunchy. I couldn't go there.
I went to schools in the Amphi district until my freshman year in high school then finished up high school at Sunnyside in 1986. At that time Sunnyside was open, with big windows in the classrooms and lots of trees and grass. Recently I have found they have bricked in the windows, cemented the grounds, and put up a huge prison-like fence.
My friends would go to the illegals (I was never allowed) or we would just go to the "river" and party. Nowadays, I'd be too paranoid to do that.
Me and my girlfriends used to drive out around the Desert Museum at night, and go park in the desert and gab. Again, I'd be way to paranoid to do that.
Tucson has NEVER been a paradise, but times were certainly simpler and not much to be afraid of. I think it's too bad my 4-year-old will never get to know THAT Tucson - just the one with too much traffic, mass-produced homes, and awful senseless crime. Someone needs to start a another group called Take Back Tucson!!
Nice to meet you guys!

Does anyone still recall that the Stone Ave underpass is nicknamed "Lake Elmira" when it fills with water ? In Tucson's early days, a woman named Elmira would go swimming in the underpass every time it flooded...........therefore the nickname. The photos on tv this week reminded me of that bit of trivia.

I'm Bjay's sister. She asked me to pipe in about the plane crashes.
In October, 1967, a small passenger plane was forced to land accidentally in the Utterback schoolyard. Two months later, a DMAFB plane crashed into the Food Giant store on Alvernon Way, a short distance from Keen Elementary. Discussion with the various official agencies resulted in some changes in flight patterns. Ten years later in October, 1978, a jet fighter crashed next to Mansfeld Junior High and the University of Arizona. Two young women were killed on 6th Street, but no TUSD students were physically harmed.
These incidents are also outlined in this website:
The link also contains this: In 1959, a woman was struck and killed when part of a plane fell off the wing of a B-47 Stratojet. That plane didn't crash. The accident occurred near the site of the 1967 crash, about a half-mile farther south on Alvernon Way.
