Re: wow, more tear downs!
Hi All,
Thanks to Gretchen for the heads-up. Yes, the U of A has leveled an entire city block of historic homes at Cherry and Seventh. Luckily I was able to get a few pics of the last house (half of it). There was another guy taking photos of the demolition named Bruce. He knows a lot about activism in historic preservation. Says he can't handle all the paperwork and is willing to train an assistant. Anyone interested? Unfortunately his computer is down right now. Hope to hear more from him in future. We're losing so many historic buildings, I don't really know what to be most concerned about. I've heard that the Fourth Avenue underpass project is imminent. It will take out a lot of grand old structures. My Rant: I recently heard one of the main project managers for Rio Nuevo say that they don't want Downtown to become just a big on-ramp for I-10. If that is so, then why increase traffic capacity? Wouldn't they want to decrease capacity, put in speed bumps, and widen the sidewalks? Doesn't make sense. Many other cities have turned downtown streets like Congress and Fourth into pedestrian malls. Here's a handy link to the comment area that Gretchen mentioned: --- In vanishingtucson@..., "gretchenannjane" <gretchenannjane@y...> wrote: With dismay, I watched as 4 more houses went on 7th st. and Cherry. |
Enchantment
Has anyone read "Enchantment of Everyday Life" by Thomas Moore? In
one chapter he talks about our need for ruins. The gist of it is, if we completely erase our past, then we don't have a clear way to think about our present or our future; we don't have a true sense of our own position in place or time. He also discusses the value of imperfection (peeling paint, crumbling mortar, overgrown vines, etc.). Money seems to be the overriding reason for most demolition (to build newer "better" houses to sell, new shopping malls or business parks to facilitate the exchange of money, or to funnel money from locals to some remote Big Business). Unfortunately, as more states start to look like each other, our personal worlds are actually getting smaller. Why would someone bother to travel to another state if all the states look exactly the same? So ultimately, it's bad business for the developers to bulldoze the character (history) of a community. In the meantime, I'm planning a cross-country road trip for my 50th birthday next year, and plan on going through places that still have real character, including Tucson. |
wow, more tear downs!
With dismay, I watched as 4 more houses went on 7th st. and Cherry.
Looked to be from the 20's-30's. More parking. Next up, 30 more from same era may go for widening of Bdwy to EIGHT lanes. This could take 10 years to happen but the time to act is always (including now) rtamobility.com is asking for comments on the plan. Based on a traffic study done in 2004, (the numbers that I saw,) the widening from Campbell/Euclid is not necessary. This is where the 30 or so houses are. It's hard to see the vanishing happen right before my eyes. Is it always necessary? If you wish, give RTA your opinion, whatever it may be. |

El CApitan!! Yep I recognize it by the photos, is it vacant?
Went to the meeting for an hour. Of note, Starbuck will displace the 4 houses on the SE corner of Campbell and Broadway. They are from the 50's according to Starbucks dude. They will be torn down for the coffee house and an adjacent parking lot...- p.s. Carlos, sorry didn't find the Eco-costa rica man. Viva El Capitan!
Hi All,
Thanks to Kitty for the address and info. I found it, and took a few pictures. See folder in thr Photos section at your left. The El Capitan is a great example of a what used to be quite common in Tucson. Funky, formerly grand structures, completely unrenovated, but still very much in use. I believe it is places like these that give Tucson such wonderful character. The El Capitan must have been a fine hotel court before it became casita apartments. Wonder if it has any ghosts. I'll ask around. Carlos P.S. Thanks Bob, I'll try to visit the old Clark Gable place this weekend. --- In vanishingtucson@..., "Kiersten Hardesty Carrillo" <kittykiersto1@c...> wrote: El Capitan refers to the following: |

anyone remember the El Capitan????? (attn: Gretchen)
Hi All,
I recently saw an interesting reference to an old place called the "El Capitan" in our Rincon Heights Neighborhood Association Newsletter. It intrigued me, so I attempted to figure out where it was by following clues given by the writer. My search was fruitless. Can anyone help? Thanks. Here is an excerpt from the column by an author known only as "Jay The Jogger". You may need your map. Quote: "I continued north on Highland up to Broadway. I had just a few more avenues to go. Rounding Mountain, I was beginning to feel more like myself. Mountain is nice and narrow and for a while I didn't have any cars to contend with. The point at which Mountain crosses High School Wash was a nice breath of nature in our little neighborhood. As I headed toward 6th, the lights were drawing me closer and closer to...to...It's not a parking structure - It's a UFO! I could practically see the aliens radiating towards the heavens! A block or so later I headed south on Fremont. Then up Broadway I weaved across to Park. I trotted down the gently sloping avenue passing the EI Capitan on my right. Folks say movie stars such as Jean Harlow stayed there years ago... But I don't think Ms. Harlow was a runner. At this point, I still had the east-west streets to contend with. Will Jay's old legs hold out for the remaining few miles ofhis neighborhood marathon? Find out in the next installment of "Jay the Jogger. " End quote. Gretchen, have you met "Jay The Jogger"? Did you make it to the RHNA meeting? Carlos |

anyone remember Boke's Drive-In?
Hi All,
I found a wonderful picture of Boke's Drive-In. Before I posted the photo, I drove by the location to see what's there now. It's a parking lot. I also found another 1940's picture of Boke's Northside location at 2408 N. Stone. That is the northeast corner of Grant and Stone, which is not referred to as "northside" anymore. Boke's must have been there before the service station was built, which looks like a 1950's building. Anyone tried their root-beer? Computer note (need help) Unfortunately, the Boke's Stone image is a bitmap file (.bmp). Somehow, my computer lost it's MS Paint program, which opened bitmap images. Does anyone know if I can reinstall just MS Paint from my Windows 98 restoration disc, without affecting the rest of my files and programs? Thanks, Carlos |

How long has Shari's been there?" ?
In 1978, Shari's Drive-In was June's Drive-In. June actually cooked
the?burgers herself. It became Shari's a short time later. In 1978, the
building already looked quite old and worn, so it was likely another drive-in
before June had it, perhaps many owners. It would be interesting to know just
how old it is, and what it was called when new.

What a great topic! I'll look for old pictures. I added a scan of the drive-in listings in my 1948 Tucson Business Directory. How about those names? I love the spelling of Central Dryv-Inn (sic). Hasty-Tasty and Polar Bar are clever. But my favorite would have to be "One's-A-Meal" (I'd eat two). Larry, at Duffie's, did they put candles on your heart-shaped pizza? Did they sing too? How old were you? Back to the present: I know "The Crossroads" mexican restaurant on S. 4th used to have car-service. They would actually bring a pitcher of beer out to your car. You can still park in the spots, but I'm not sure if they'll send a waitress out to take your order. I'm SURE they won't serve you booze in your car. They have a great old neon sign. Not sure if it still lights up. Does anyone know if "Shari's 1st Ave. Drive-In" still has car-service? How long has Shari's been there? I may need to do some hands-on research this weekend. My mouth is watering already. Here's the list so far. I'm sure we can add a lot more. If you've been actually there, please describe it. I'll eventually post the list in the "Files" section. Thanks, Carlos drive-in restaurants: Arroyo 4900 E. Speedway A&W on Speedway Big Bob's Central Dryv-Inn 1107 N. Stone Circle Drive Inn 3802 S. 6th Crossroads 2604 S. 4th Dixie Drive-Inn 1019 N.
