Re: wow, more tear downs!

Hi All,

Thanks to Gretchen for the heads-up. Yes, the U of A has leveled an
entire city block of historic homes at Cherry and Seventh. Luckily I
was able to get a few pics of the last house (half of it).

There was another guy taking photos of the demolition named Bruce. He
knows a lot about activism in historic preservation. Says he can't
handle all the paperwork and is willing to train an assistant. Anyone
interested? Unfortunately his computer is down right now. Hope to
hear more from him in future.

We're losing so many historic buildings, I don't really know what to
be most concerned about. I've heard that the Fourth Avenue underpass
project is imminent. It will take out a lot of grand old structures.

My Rant: I recently heard one of the main project managers for Rio
Nuevo say that they don't want Downtown to become just a big on-ramp
for I-10. If that is so, then why increase traffic capacity?
Wouldn't they want to decrease capacity, put in speed bumps, and widen
the sidewalks? Doesn't make sense. Many other cities have turned
downtown streets like Congress and Fourth into pedestrian malls.

Here's a handy link to the comment area that Gretchen mentioned:

lanes. This could take 10 years to happen but the time to act is
always (including now)
rtamobility.com is asking for comments on the plan. Based on a traffic
study done in 2004, (the numbers that I saw,) the widening from
Campbell/Euclid is not necessary. This is where the 30 or so houses
are.
It's hard to see the vanishing happen right before my eyes. Is it
always necessary? If you wish, give RTA your opinion, whatever it may
be.

Enchantment

Has anyone read "Enchantment of Everyday Life" by Thomas Moore? In
one chapter he talks about our need for ruins. The gist of it is, if
we completely erase our past, then we don't have a clear way to think
about our present or our future; we don't have a true sense of our
own position in place or time. He also discusses the value of
imperfection (peeling paint, crumbling mortar, overgrown vines,
etc.).
Money seems to be the overriding reason for most demolition (to build
newer "better" houses to sell, new shopping malls or business parks
to facilitate the exchange of money, or to funnel money from locals
to some remote Big Business). Unfortunately, as more states start to
look like each other, our personal worlds are actually getting
smaller. Why would someone bother to travel to another state if all
the states look exactly the same? So ultimately, it's bad business
for the developers to bulldoze the character (history) of a
community.
In the meantime, I'm planning a cross-country road trip for my 50th
birthday next year, and plan on going through places that still have
real character, including Tucson.

El CApitan!! Yep I recognize it by the photos, is it vacant?
Went to the meeting for an hour. Of note, Starbuck will displace the
4 houses on the SE corner of Campbell and Broadway. They are from
the 50's according to Starbucks dude. They will be torn down for the
coffee house and an adjacent parking lot...-

In 1978, Shari's Drive-In was June's Drive-In. June
actually cooked the burgers herself. It became
Shari's a short time later. In 1978, the building
already looked quite old and worn, so it was likely
another drive-in before June had it, perhaps many
owners. It would be interesting to know just how old
it is, and what it was called when new.

Re: Drive-inns

Hi All,

What a great topic! I'll look for old pictures. I added a scan of
the drive-in listings in my 1948 Tucson Business Directory. How about
those names? I love the spelling of Central Dryv-Inn (sic).
Hasty-Tasty and Polar Bar are clever. But my favorite would have to
be "One's-A-Meal" (I'd eat two).

Larry, at Duffie's, did they put candles on your heart-shaped pizza?
Did they sing too? How old were you?

Back to the present:

I know "The Crossroads" mexican restaurant on S. 4th used to have
car-service. They would actually bring a pitcher of beer out to your
car. You can still park in the spots, but I'm not sure if they'll
send a waitress out to take your order. I'm SURE they won't serve you
booze in your car.
They have a great old neon sign. Not sure if it still lights up.

Does anyone know if "Shari's 1st Ave. Drive-In" still has car-service?
How long has Shari's been there?

I may need to do some hands-on research this weekend. My mouth is
watering already.

Here's the list so far. I'm sure we can add a lot more. If you've
been actually there, please describe it. I'll eventually post the
list in the "Files" section.

Thanks,

Carlos
