It hasn't been that long since they razed the BBQ Ranch. Maybe a

old signs behind after demolition.
Many times old signs are left up because a new owner can use them
(they're grandfathered with the land). Trying to get the City of
Tucson (or most other municipalities) to allow new signs is a major
headache for business owners (I think SWS Electronic's new sign on
Speedway has been in place for over a month and is still waiting the
go-ahead from the City to actually use it to advertise its location!)

Oxford Plaza - Let's see.... Cloth World, but now I'm not sure. Was
it Hancock's? There was a grocery store there at one time. I used to
go there with my aunt. I took gymnastics and dance lessons at Beverly
Fridel's Dance Studio at the west end of the plaza. There was a
laundry mat at the far west end.... chipped my tooth on a glass soda
pop bottle from a soda machine there. Later on there was a Buffalo
Exchange where the laundry mat used to be. I think there was a liquor
store at the east end. Can't remember anything else. Need to read the
rest of the posts and maybe my memory will be sparked.
I think the fabric store there was always (and still is) a Hancock's.
Next door to it (to the west) was a Thrifty's Drugstore.

to see the '70s version of "Food of The Gods" at Cineworld 4.
At times, one of the theatres at Cineworld 4 was dedicated to adult
films. They showed "The Sex Boat" (one of those goofy parodies of
"The Love Boat") and the X-rated musical version of "Alice in
Wonderland." At least it was a place to go and see something like
that if you were in your early 20s, a woman, and didn't want to go
into a place like the Empress!

Re: Movies Filmed in Tucson (or nearby)

"Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man," with Mickey Rourke,?was filmed in Tucson.? I remember scenes by the 6th ave. Alamo Apts and the Ugly But Honest car dealers as well as at the Pima Air Museum.? And one that surprised me when I found out it was filmed at Old Tucson was Andy Warhol's western "Lonesome Cowboys," with Joe D'Allesandro.?
I know I knew others, but can't come up with any now.? And wasn't the Frat House in the Nerds on University, a few blocks west of the campus?

Re: Movies Filmed in Tucson THE LIST ( oh boy, A CONTEST)...

The TV show "Petrocelli" is already on the list, but here's a bit of trivia. Petrocelli's office was in the building on Congress & Scott where the Indian Trading Post? used to be. His name was painted in gold letters on one of the 2nd story windows on the Scott st. side. It remained for years after the show was cancelled. Barry Newman played Petrocelli. Petrocelli and his wife lived in a trailer.

"Little House On The Prairie" had a story arc where Laura goes to college. They shot scenes around Old Main at the U of A.

The Nickelodeon show "Hey Dude" was shot at the Tanque Verde Guest Ranch.

All members should be able to access and edit this list. If the film
or TV show that you know of isn't on the list, please add it to the
list, by date. Please add your first name so we know who contributed.

Please add as much info as you can on locations, etc., so our list
will be more meaningful than the other lists available on the web.

Whoever adds the most info will win a DVD copy of "Moonfire", a
trucker flick shot in and around Tucson in 1972. It is almost
impossible to find this movie. Great but brief shots of the Triple T
Truck Stop, Congress Street, and best of all, the old Rancho El Diablo
Guest Ranch.

This film is in the "public domain" so I can make extra copies in case
of a tie.

Thanks everyone!

-The bar scenes in White Line Fever were filmed at the Oxbow Saloon at
2849 N First. I was told that I had a great time-even got paid for it.
Anybody else remember "The Bow"?

Re: Movies Filmed in Tucson (or nearby)

Dont forget my favorite - Robert Blake's "Electra Glide in Blue." [Short Tucson motorcycle cop
with issues gets promoted to murder detective.] The aforementioned "White Line Fever" gets
a lot of points for Tucson scenery. I just remembered that the denouement of "Harley
Davidson and the Marlboro Man" is a shootout in the Boneyard at Davis Monthan, but the
funniest Tucson reference is in "The Thirteenth Floor" in which the main character who thinks
he is going to a time travelling service [guess which floor it's on] discovers that his whole
world is really some kind of computer matrix after receiving a tip to try driving to Tucson.
***Spoiler Alert!****
On the way there just a few miles out of town the entire landscape starts turning into
wireframe animation and the road siops because Tucson is only a concept in his
programmed world.

Re: Movies Filmed in Tucson (or nearby)

Also "Thunder Alley," with Leif Garrett, which filmed at the same time as "Revenge of the Nerds" at what was once Stumble Inn, Reid Park, and the outside of the Rialto downtown, among other places. It was filmed at the same time as "Revenge"; I was an extra in it and it went straight to video - wish I'd been in "Revenge" instead, which I consider a classic!

Another is "Tin Cup," with Kevin Costner & Renee Russo. They shot a scene at the Hotel Congress when I was working there and I got to have a short conversation with Costner on the day they filmed. They painted a sign on the corner of the building for the movie which is still there.

Since some people have mentioned Old Tucson movies as well, I believe "The Quick and the Dead" was filmed there in the '80s, as well as "Stones for Ibarra," with Glenn Close and Keith Carradine, for the Hallmark Hall of Fame series, and "Tombstone." I get why we wouldn't include the Old Tucson movies though, cos there's probably tons of them!

Re: Movies Filmed in Tucson (or nearby)

There was a film called White Line Fever that sorta started out all the
trucker movies made in the 70's, it stars Jan Michael Vincent and the
Triple T truck stop.

Re: Movies Filmed in Tucson (or nearby)

"Lillies of the Field" was a movie I caught on tv several months ago.

"Major League" shot scenes at Hi Corbett.

"Stir Crazy" was shot in Tucson. There is a scene at Congress & Stone
with the old Downtowner restaurant in the shot and they also filmed at
a strip bar that used to be on 29th & Craycroft.

"Revenge of The Nerds" also used the Tucson High campus as well as the
U of A. I remember the burned out frat house they constructed next to
the frat house they used in the film which I think is on Speedway.
This is the jock's frat house, not the nerd's house.

One of my favorite Old Tucson movies is "Rio Bravo". Two others I
remember seeing as first releases: "Posse" and "Hawmps". Perhaps
obvious, yet still legit. ;)

And of course "Arizona", the film Old Tucson was constructed for.

Remember when they would play Harry Nilsson's "You're Breaking My Heart"
and would leave "so F*** You" in it? Great stuff!

I remember the playing of albums. That's how I became aware of the
first Black Sabbath album without Ozzy Osbourne. They also used to play
the song "Precious" by the Pretenders in which the phrase F*** Off is
sung very clearly. And of course there was Bob Cooke and the tragic end
he came to. Does anyone remember which club it happened at?

I remember the KUAT DJs regularly being unaware that a record was
stuck skipping at the same place. Quite often they would forget to turn
off the microphone. We'd be treated to hearing their coversations as the
selection was playing. I remember one pretentious DJ who would pronounce
every composer's name as if it were French.

I just remembered a son to add to the list. It was a locally produced
novelty song titled "Tucson Valley Boy" (or maybe it was valley guy)
that was done when the Frank Zappa tune "Valley Girl" was a hit in
1982. I forget which radio station used to play it.

It's on the Laurie Records label, recorded at Allegro Sound Studios.

I remember it being played on the local top-40 stations but can't find
the exact year. While searching, I found this site which has it, and a
couple of other Tucson related songs:
