Re: Berta Wright

Berta and her husband Ade were dear friends of my mothers for many years. My sister got the BW fabric (a screen print, I believe), but right beside me now is a 1950s lamp she made; within it is a tile she designed and glazed - classic Berta. It had been in Berta's mother's house. I can send a pic if you are interested.

Berta Wright

Does anyone have any pic's of Berta Wright fabric designs? I've been doing some research because I have a pillow that she produced but would be interested in anything like what I remember as "Ojo de Dios/God's Eye" designs. Ring any bells?

Thanks in advance,

Re: La Placita theater in the '70's?

I was commenting on the Star's captions referring to Broadway as "street" instead of Blvd. which happened maybe a couple of months ago several times. My question is if this has been a recent change or just a stupid mistake on the part of The Star.? Nobody has bothered to answer, young or old.?

Okay, I guess I'm a little miffed at the Star lately.? Does anyone know that they're hoarding literally hundreds of thousands of old Citizen photographs, uncatalogued, unused, and deteriorating?? They don't even use the hoard for their own occasional historic interest stories, like Street Smarts.? And they don't allow any public access.? Most other major and minor photo collections have long ago been donated to the Arizona Historical Society, or UA Special Collections.

Additionally, the Star does occasionally run a "wasn't Tucson quaint?" story, but overall, their editorial slant is consistently anti preservation, and pro-bulldozing. ?? ?

I'll keep asking folks about Broadway and La Placita.?

Re: La Placita theater in the '70's?

It was called Camp Street before it was changed to Broadway Blvd. The captions I'm referring to that called it "Broadway Street" accompanied photos posted earlier this year. I'm actually asking the question - was the name changed to Broadway St.? I've asked several times in different forums, and nobody has given an answer. Maybe they were thinking I was being sarcastic.

Re: La Placita theater in the '70's?

I saved some info from an Star timecapsule feature I found online a few years ago. The theater was converted to the City Club Gym in? the spring of 1983. Sorry, but I can't find the link.

It sounds contradictory to cite the Star as a source after complaining about their shortcomings, but their research seems to have declined over the last couple of years. Not too long ago they had captions on photos calling Broadway? Blvd. "Broadway Street." Was the name changed?

Re: La Placita theater in the '70's?

I thought the same thing when I saw that story, and remembered going to
those theaters. Wasn't KRQ, et al, there too?

The Star's downtown bureau has been in La Placenta for decades, which
makes to boo-boo even more sad.

Re: La Placita theater in the '70's?

Converted to a gym in 1981. KNST was right upstairs and we had a back door that led to the gym, called the City Club. It was great!?

Re: La Placita theater in the '70's?

Thanks! I took a lot of dates there in my high school and college days. I don't remember the movies (or the dates for that matter) but I remember the theater!

Re: La Placita theater in the '70's?

Yeah, it was called the La Placita Cinema 3 meaning 3 theaters. It was in the basement and was converted to a gym around 1984. Not surprised that the Star didn't know this.

La Placita theater in the '70's?

An article in the Star on Sunday asserted that a new movie theater downtown will show first-run movies for the first time in 40 years--since the Fox Theater closed in 1974. Wasn't there a La Placita theater downtown that was open in the late '70's as well??

Re: urgent need for Marco¡¯s photo

Very nostalgic to hear about Marco's,Carlos. I worked there in the mid-70s as a delivery driver. They didn't tell me when I applied for the job that the last driver had been shot in the head. I mostly delivered to the whorehouses on Miracle Mile. I would be met at the door by an enforcer holding a shotgun, and often the ladies wanted to work off the bill in the back room. Being young, naive and poor I never indulged. Lots of great memories. ? ?

Hello All,
?
Great news.? Mario¡¯s Pizza on 1st Avenue at Ft. Lowell is restoring their classic neon sign.? In order to do an historically accurate job, they need to know what the sign looked like when it used to be ¡°Marco¡¯s¡± from 1958 to 1978.? I would really appreciate if you check your old photos and see if you have one.? Remember that image of the sign could be in the background, over someone¡¯s shoulder.? Business owners were proud of their signs in the 50s and 60s, so an image might also be found on a Marco¡¯s menu or advertisement. An image of the 22nd St location near Craycroft might also be helpful.? The 1st Ave and 22nd street locations were basically identical.
?
If your photos or slides or home movies are in a dusty shoebox, buried in the back of a Tuffshed in your backyard, don¡¯t worry, I¡¯ll come over and do all the work digging them out and putting everything back again neatly.? As always, I¡¯d be glad to digitize many of your images, free of charge, especially the ones that might be of interest to other VanishingTucson members. Just send me an e-mail, and I¡¯m on my way.
?
You may remember that Spring¡¯s Hardware was across the street from Marco¡¯s.? I wish that the person who took this photo in 1974 would have turned around and took a snapshot of Marco¡¯s. Maybe he or she did?
?
?
Thanks,

Carlos
?
P.S. as always, please post whatever photos you have, not just Marco¡¯s.

Re: Where's the beef? No, where's the FISH?

My birder friend assures me that there are now ::two:: black crowned night herons in the tree tops over the lake at Reid Park. And there was a big and alive blue heron that was over by Sweetwater, but it seems to have left about a month ago.

Cheers,

Phyllis

Hi Carlos? ...I joined the Group a week ago, and this is my first time to send pictures.?Could you let me know if they?get to you, it would be great !

?

1) The all-time favorite 10 cent balsa wood glider made by good old Guillow's? ! Yes sir ree bob !

I found an intact survivor in my old grade school stuff when I was going to Brichta Elementary school. I remember the vast majority of all my dimes buying these over at Gil's Hobby Shop downtown, in 1959?- early 1960's !

?

Gil's Hobby : if we all remember, was located next to the Fox theater downtown.? It was a Saturday morning must do for us kids [;-)

Facing the entrance to the Fox, you turned to your Left,?walked?down the sidewalk maybe 30 ft, and looked for the plain glass door. Open the door and trot down the stairs to good old Gil's Hobby Shop. It was pure paradise for us ! Slot car track , the first in Tucson, and loaded with all the latest in cool?toys ...without all the totally ridiculous and idiotic?"warning lables"?to "protect us, from ourselves ???...sheesh how totally stupid they are.? YUCK !

Good ol FLASH TV & Appliances - 832 S 6th Ave

- first TV "store" in Tucson. ... Established 1945?at "5 Points " on So 6th Ave,?Grew to 7 stores in Tucson over the decades.

Finally closed in 2012 after serving Tucson and every single nook and cranny in Southern Arizona for 67 years.

Delivering Tv's and appliances to customers located in places that a mountain goat would shy away from !

Ever try hand carrying a 6 ft long home entertainment center, up a flight?of 350 near-vertical?stairs in good old Bisbee ?

Anyones that's?been to Bisbee, can?quickly appreciate the sight of two guys pulling the thing up those steps, one at a time.

The later years found Ted delivering customers Tv's and washing machines with his Cessna Turbo 210

?

At Ted's funeral Frank Kalil said," They seen 'em all come, and seen 'em all go."

Frank Kalil ( Kalil Bottling Co. ) was Flash Tv owner, Ted Takessian's, lifetime best friend.

Ted Takessian was best known all over?Tucson,?as "Ted Flash".

The legacy and network of dear friends that?Ted had was comprised of Tucson's pioneer familes Flash as he was best known,

Ted had?life-like hard board stand-up ad posters made, that decorated the inside of each store.

Frank Kalil was best known as the Disc Jockey on KTKT channel 99 Color Radio and for doing all the massive Tv & Radio advertising for?"Ted Flash" at Flash Tv until its end.

Re: Where's the beef? No, where's the FISH?

I visited Reid Park Zoo this past March and again last week, and both times I saw a heron in the tree tops there.

Re: Where's the beef? No, where's the FISH?

Well, butter me up and call me a biscuit because I sure ain't no naturalist. ?I managed to catch sight of that Great Blue Heron this afternoon on the way home and realized it was closely related to the Big Pink Yard Flamingo from down Miami way. ?Yep, that puppy is plastic and perched perpetually on somebody's parapet. ?A "watch heron" so to speak. ?Guess I didn't see that one coming. ?In the words of Miss Emily Litella, "Never mind."

I drop my wife off at Mission & Ajo to pick up her shuttle ride out to Tohono O'odham Community College in Sells - she contracts as a librarian out there.? I usually drive down Silverlake/29th Street from Kino to Mission and since it runs through a lot of residential area, it's posted 25 mph and you have time to look at the neighborhood.? At first I thought I was mistaken but this morning I saw this bird, again.? Sitting on a building near the intersection of 9th Avenue and 29th Street was a Great Blue Heron.? I don't see him every day but this is the 3rd time in about a month.? He can't be over-wintering in Tucson.? Do the wetlands created up at Sweetwater have enough fish to draw a heron to live in Arizona?? I remember seeing brown pelicans in the lake at Randolph Park but the wildlife people said they were most likely blown up here by storms.? There was a posting about herons at Agua Caliente but that still seems like too small a source of water for attracting water birds.? Any birders or biologists out there?
