I do remember that old parking garage.? That's where my grandmother would park when she took me?downtown.? We'd go to the department stores, I'll never forget that huge crystal chandelier at Steinfeld's.? Then to the top of?what was then the tallest bank building in town,?(I don't remember which bank, they have come and gone and merged too much).? That was where the Old Pueblo Club was located and we'd meet my grandfather for lunch.? That was the Tucson of my childhood.? I remember better the Steinfeld's that was located in what became El Con Mall and the Sears on east Broadway.? Still, those earliest memories are magic.? I loved the Tucson of my childhood and hate what it's turning into. ?-----Original Message-----

As for parking lots, we lose SO MUCH to construct the things, downtown and around the University. The ironic thing about parking lots downtown, is that behind Jacome's across the alley, was a great parking garage. And two blocks closer than the one constructed on the old Levy's and Sears bulding sites.

That kind of silliness is what happens when bureaucrats (and the majority of apathetic citizens) do not value existing structures. "New" is rarely better when the "new" is planned by people ignorant of an area's history.
?
And what did we get in place of the multi-level parking structure behind Jacome's and conveniently across the street from the old Courthouse?? ANOTHER mini park, with NO shade which seems to be rarely used, and has no productive purpose.
?
On the other hand, small, special interest groups, got a new Library and Bureaucrats got some bragging rights that they did something in our best interest. Does anyone remember the old Library and how cool it was with the wing for children?
?
On the other hand, had they enlarged that building, they probably would have put cheap stucco around the Georgian columns or something. Like Alan Elais had done to the amazing concrete Frieze (sp?) work and stone masonry on the?outside of the old Pioneer Hotel, when he turned it into a boring office building in the mid 70's (shortly following his demolishing of Steinfeld's).
