Hi, Does anyone remember Woody's Sporting Store that
was in the same building as Leo's. We used to buy all
our equiptment for Little League from our home town
dealer. Does anyone know what to Woody?

Hi Again,
Welcome to Phyllis, and thanks for finding the
original Paul Bunyan
manufacturer (International Fiberglass of Venice,
CA, 1962-1972).
I called Don's Hot Rod Shop, and here's the basic
story:
Leo opened the hardware store and the gas station
back in the 1930's
(maybe earlier). Stone was a dirt road then.
Leo's son Don worked in the store and the gas
station for his Dad.
Leo's hardware business grew, and in the 1950's, Don
started selling
Hot Rod stuff, or "speed equipment" inside the
hardware store.
By the 1960's, Leo owned a lot of property along
Stone, north of
Glenn. Apparently, Leo was looking for a way to draw
attention to his
businesses. Somehow or other, in 1964, Leo bought
the lumberjack at
an auction in San Francisco.
In 1974, Don built his own building for his Hot Rod
Shop that we see
there today.
The gas station has been gone for many years. The
hardware store
couldn't compete against the bigger chains and went
out of business
more recently.
Carlos
P.S. Next time I need a part for the old Ranchero,
I'll try Don's
instead of heading to Autozone.
