OPEN BAND CONTRA DANCE

Similar to square dancing, contra dancing is a social dance that is popular around
North America. Lines of paired individuals perform simple footwork patterns, walking steps, and twirls. Our open band will be playing fiddle tunes from Celtic, French Canadian, American, and other traditions. Maureen Collier will be calling the dance patterns, along with the debut of new, local callers. Beginner dancers of all ages and orientations are very welcome - no partner needed. Donations for musicians and callers gratefully accepted. Contact prairiewolfe@... with any questions.

In case of rain, this event will be rescheduled to Sunday, Aug 25 @
12:00 noon to 5:30pm. Please RSVP to be notified of any last minute changes.

Event sponsors: Neighbourhood Small Grants and the Vancouver Country Dance society.

Getting there:
Transit: exit Patterson Skytrain Station (Expo Line), walk 15 mins southwest towards
Imperial Street towards the South Pond. We are located next to the pond and the Pitch and Putt.
Driving: This park is easily accessible from
Vancouver and is bordered by Kingsway, Boundary Rd, Imperial Street, and Patterson Avenue.
Parking: The Imperial/Pitch and Putt parking lot is accessible from
Imperial Street (south border of Central Park) and is closest to the dance location. Overflow street parking is available on the south side of Imperial Street along Mandy Ave, or Dubois St. If parking at the Boundary Road/Central Park Pool parking lot, take the gravel trail at the south end of the lot and follow it southeast to the Lower Pond area.

Don't forget to bring: shade hat, sunscreen, water bottle, and fun stuff! (see above). As we will be dancing on grass, please wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Bathrooms are available nearby.

COVID-safety: Please do not attend if you have recently tested positive for COVID-19 or are experiencing flu/cold/COVID-like symptoms. Dancers may also choose to wear a mask as they prefer.

?????????????????????????????

Keeping the sparkle in your eyes, with Vancouver's own Conchordance: five local musicians with a mission to create concord on the dance floor. They aim to give you a treat for your ears, a beat for your feet, and a smile on your face. The band consists of Leith Davis on fiddle, Maureen Collier on flute, Ken Hamer on mandolin and percussion, Eileen Sterns on octave mandolin, tenor banjo, accordion, harp, hammer dulcimer (and whatever else she pulls out of her musical bag of tricks), and Connie Balaz on piano.?

Bob Rentz is a caller living in Burnaby, BC. He has been dancing since 1957, when he was in Grade 5. He learned the basics of calling from Marian Rose, and has been calling contradances since 1998. He loves contras, English country dances, and family dances.
Heather Webster is known for her concise calling, attention to detail and general delight in dance of all kinds. Coming from a background in English Country dance, she began calling in Vancouver in 2016 and is now branching out to call dances in Seattle and Victoria.
