Q to the community: Ping Time
Q: Is there any advantage to monitoring Ping time to the IB Server?
My thought is, If communication time exceeds 5000 ms then suspend the
trade invocation portion of the ATS until communication time delay is
more reasonable.
Your thoughts?

The Ultimate GUI Features list and Screen Shot post up.

Thanks to Scott for posting up the screen shot of his GUI in the
Photos section. It would be nice if others would do this too. It
would me nice to see the Art Work / Skins of the different GUI's
being crafted by the community.
I printed out Trader Guards screen shot and poured over it.
What features in your interface do you find critical that most other
traders do not include in their Interface or GUI?
Looking forward to your ideas.

I'll find and post the TradeGuard screen shot in the Bookmarks.
There was a link to it in one of the posts. I'll find
it and book mark it.

Some kind of verification of timely quotes is important. That's why
IB's lack of time-stamping is troubling. Perhaps if enough of us request
they add time stamps, they'll look into it.
Until IB adds some means of verification it seems the trader should
either do it manually, or have his software cross-check with another
data source.
Ping times don't tell you a whole lot -- unless the network connection
is really hosed. But automated system testing is generally a good idea.

Investor RT / IB Interface
Scott, et al.. (Investor RT folks)
If I recall correctly you were / are heavy into using Investor RT. I
know Mike was lusting after a full automation interface (so he said
in a Linnsoft post sometime ago). Out of curiosity, is that part of
your focus and direction as well?

Investor RT / IB Interface - a small clarification.

I got a little worried about what I claimed Mike said ... (I was mind
reading and paraphrasing his words). Here is what he did say if
anyone is going to pick me apart on it:

twsapi: TraderGuard is now 4.56MB - check TWSAPI file area.
Where is this Tradegaurd application to download
from?

My question is to the moderator of this site.
?
I am a subscriber to this site and I have a
problem.
I get messages from this site as emails. In these emails, you
refer to "files" section at the left hand side of the screen, but I do not get a
menu on the left hand side of the scree. Now, how can go to your web site from
my email to see these files you often talk about in the email I
receive?
Thanks.

twsapi: Re: automated login

Trader Guard............The "T" word......
TraderGuard can be reached at traderguard@...
This might come as a shock to some but....
I pulled his file and pulled his last 4 posts.
Originally "he" (no name) gave a link to an
application download that was 24 mb's in size, and attempted to
overwrite critical files necessary for the proper use of TWS and
common in VB applications (OCX).
The application was restricted to the use of a single symbol and "he"
wanted $150 to unlock it. It had absolutley no documentation as to
what it did..It was a black box program with no explanations
whatsoever.
After I examined his software, and uninstalled it, it attempted to
remove the TWS OCX from my system.
The second version that was released in less then 24 hours, had been
reduced to 4.5 MB...and "he" had unlocked the symbols restriction.
"He" uploaded it this time to our members files area, and once again
I downloaded an examined it. The installation process again attempted
to overwrite key ocx files. Once installed I ran the executable and
got a "subscript out of range error".
3 other members had immediatley posted errors as well, though not all
the same error.
I have no problem with members, who LIKE TODD made an announcement
and has well documented explanation pages that are very clear as to
what a program does. They are welcome to plug their product once and
then from time to time...they can plug again. They can post links in
the Third Party Bookmarks folder.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/twsapi/links/TWS_API_Third_Party__001025
183751/
What I do have a problem with is are super-hyped, large bloated,
disfunctional applications, rushed to release, absent of
documentation as to method or use. I will refuse to allow our board
to turn into a product support board for for a product that needs
more than support...AND I have ZERO tollerance for a member that has
convienetley turned off mail receipts there by FORCING us to
communicate with him via the board....lastley, I find it astounding
that
a developer would offer a black box to other developers, and that
They would be interested....after all...don't we program because we
want more control over our trades, not less?
I told Mr TraderGuard in a private email, that his posts would be
moderated for only one week (one stinking week), and that he should
restrict his discussion to aspects of this board, or aspects related
to the use and implamentation the TWS API....
He hasn't been heard from since.
Their...I came clean....that is the first time I have actually
moderated anything...hopefully its the last...I feel so much better
now....

I agree, thanks for posting it. It certainly shows that package has
a long way to go. (My opinion, of course.)
I'm amazed at how many new programmers and new traders overlook the need
for economy of screen space. Most traders never have enough space for
everything they want to display.
If you're using charts then the trade software really needs only a
tiny bit of real estate to do it's job. Minimalism is important here.
Much can be learned from surveying the various tools available.

What type of Excel interface do you envision with your
existing project? I am working with excel (DDE) and VBA. I thought I
could get your ideas on this before I get to far along and perhaps
integrate any ideas into my design if they are compatible. I guess
one key would be to utilized the inherent capabilities of excel to
crunch numbers etc. thus saving lot of programming. Anyhow another
rabbit trail, but with enough trails perhaps they may all connect.
Thanks Kent

Demo system trading hours...

What hours can orders be filled with the demo user? It was OK this
morning but now it says orders can't be placed outside market hours.
I was hoping the demo would loop friday's info over the weekend, but
I guess not.

New Project Uploaded for VB6: AutoConnect
I just uploaded a new VB6 project for automatically closing the
dialog box that the TWS creates when you request data via ActiveX.
You can download the files at the following location. Source code is
included in the zip file.

Thanks for the contribution.
For those that aren't aware, this is a tool that circumvents some minor
security measures within TWS. It's not hard to reinforce security
elsewhere to make up for this, but it's good to know.
The security of your system is ultimately up to you.

TWS API Excel sample sheet
I downloaded the TWS API files from IB site a couple of days ago and
took a look at the Excel DDE sample sheet. I followed the scant
instructions and gave it a go, in "demo" mode. I couldn't place a
trade from the spreadsheet, but I managed to modify a trade that I
placed in the TWS manually using the spreadsheet! I could check on
the trade and cancel it also, but I could not place a trade!
I'm sure this issue has already been discussed among some of you. If
anyone could point me to a good resource on the subject it would be
greatly appreciated.
many thanks in advance

automated login
11
Hi,
Does somebody know some way to run the TWS application unattended?
What I need is:
1- Avoid the login screen, passing parameters (UserName and Password) from
my calling application.
2- Respond to the message window asking 'Accept incoming connection
attempt?' when I connect to the local server.
This is because I'm writting my own program (Visual Basic using TWS ActiveX)
which allways runs in the background and want it to automatically launch TWS
few minutes before markets open and perform some automated tasks when I'm
not at home.
I've tried to launch TWS from my application with a call to 'ShellExecute',
passing parameters as 'username' or 'user' without success. I always get the
login screen blank because I ignore if TWS accepts such parameters and how
they must be coded (I think this must be possible because in the web demo,
the login screen appears whith such fields pre-filled with 'edemo' and
'demouser'). Perhaps in some 'ini' file? (I've not found any section related
to username and password).
Thanks for any help.
Michel.
