TWS will periodically "hang" on Initializing managers after daily restart and have purple grid

This will happen rarely, but couple of times in last 2 weeks, the TWS was stuck on initializing managers very likely sometime after the Daily Restart. The grids will all be purple, and the only way out is to exit and restart. When I have checked the TWS log, I dont see anything obvious( no out of memory exception etc).I have the heap size at 2 GB. I can have a lot of orders at any time. so not sure if that can cause this. This is on Windows 10 offline build 978, Nov 13 2020

This affects my trading bot which is scheduled to run every day when market opens ( esp. on days when I am out of the house). Can anyone suggest anything to look for? Thanks

Every time I've seen the grids go purple it was an internet outage and TWS went back to normal when the internet was available again. But this was after all the startup and initializing managers had completed. I don't recall having TWS hang during startup.

Well, I upgraded my TWS to the latest offline version. Will see if that makes any difference.

The purple grid occurs (for me, anyway), when TWS loses the Primary server. For me this is cdc1.ibllc.com, Every day at 15:45 or 15:46 US Central time, which is 06:45 the next morning Sydney time at this time of year..

I live in Sydney and the account is with IB Australia. The computer and TWS are set to US Central time. I suspect that this particular server (cdc1.ibllc.com) is reset at this time on a daily basis. Still haven't figured out why the reset happens when US market is still open.

The reset periods per region are documented at the bottom of the page and shows "First reset: 16:30 - 17:00 ET" for the Asia region. That is in line with your experience of ~15:45CT. While they don't say why that time has been selected, it makes sort of sense for traders in Asia who trade in Asia.

You say you have the computer and TWS running in the "US Central" time zone, but what region have you selected for TWS? At the bottom of the TWS login window is a "More Options" button that, among other fields, allows the selection of the TWS region as America, Europe, Asia, and China. Unless you have selected America already, maybe you could try selecting region "America" to hopefully prevent resets during the US trading hours. If that does not work, maybe IBKR can configure your account for American reset hours.

cdc1.ibllc.com? is the server for US Central as you can see from and so.

Hello 闯ü谤驳别苍, thanks for the response.

I just checked the trading computer and, yes, America is selected as the Region, as well as the time zone being set to UTC -06:00 America/Chicago. Funny thing, though, when the primary server disconnects, all the other servers remain connected, so I'm confident the purple grid isn't just an internet issue. It takes about 2 to 3 minutes for the primary server to connect again.

The issue is something I have on my list to talk to IB about eventually, that's why the above post immediately caught my attention when @Nick mentioned the purple grid. Another disconnection happens at 07:15 US Central, but I need to check exactly what is happening at that time before I contact IB about the issue. Both times are outside my trading window, so I haven't been too worried as yet.

Btw, I am aware of those disconnects - I am in West Cost USA time, so it happens between 9:20 and 9:40 pm and lasts approximately 30 seconds or so. Other than the occurrences I mention below though, they usually self-correct.?

So this still happens after upgrading to the recent version of TWS - I think I have noticed now that it has only happened after Wednesday disconnects and recovery( the daily midnight EST disconnects) the last 3 weeks. For now, what I have done is changed my daily TWS restart to happen after these disconnects ( 1am EST). This worked last night..

If you can move the TWS restart farther from the nightly IB reset I think you have a better chance of avoiding surprises.

It all depends on the markets you trade of course. I only look at US markets so I can restart TWS at 5:15Pm eastern when all local markets are closed.

Yeah, I also trade the US markets only. So far I was doing the restart ahead of the nightly resets (around 7:55 pm PST), and so if the reset (recovery) wasnt clean, my TWS would be stuck till next morning when trading starts and I needed to doublecheck early morning that it was stuck or not. Now I have pushed the restart past the reset in the hope that the restart fixes any lingering issues from the reset. At least it worked last night.

If you are still getting resets, just send a secure message to IB and describe your problem to them. I did the same yesterday regarding my reset times (see post 48041 above), and had a response from IB overnight (Sydney time). I've seen many people bag IB support, but this was a very quick response, and directly to the point.

It turns out that I am connected to a US server, with Hong Kong reset times, resulting in a disconnection from the Primary Server, with the resulting purple grids, at 07:15 and 15:45 US Central time each trading day. IB are going to change me to the Hong Kong server, with US reset times. I will still get the resets, but not while I am looking at the US markets. It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Will do. Thanks
