Suspension Woes ....
Another post about the new Itasca. The first time I drove the camper was from the cabin to the mechanic (long story), and it was like driving a Bouncy House full of hyperactive teenagers. It came with the original shocks (and Boy Howdy are they toast!) so the camper is in the shop getting four new Bilstein shocks (24-002585 and 24-184832). When we got it on the lift, it was no surprise that one air bag doesn't hold air, and the other is just AWOL! Thank goodness the springs looked, well, springy!
There are two Air Lifts that seem to fit the truck, the 571113 and 88113. Do y'all have any preferences? The mechanic mentioned installing air lifts that had a built in compressor, but I think for the several hundred dollars more, I can just put air in them the old fashioned way. Or am I just being cheap? Sigh ... we haven't checked the brakes (they seemed mushy to me) or the timing belt yet .... Many thanks, Sue Crowe (rapidly spending the Repair Budget) |
Well, dagnabbit -- I sent the info on the correct air bags to my mechanic on Saturday, asking if he wanted me to order them off Amazon, after discussing new air bags with him on Friday afternoon. Went by today to see why he hadn't responded (and check something in the rv), turns out he'd already ordered the Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate 88113's, with the "exclusive internal jounce bumper built inside of the air bag to help absord shock and prevent bottoming out." The 88113's are $134 more than the 57113's, which is irritating but not a deal breaker for me.
He'll have to pay shipping back to etrailer (which was $30 more than Amazon!), so I told him I'd ask y'all if there was a problem using the 88113, or if they are just overkill. Thanks for all the help --- this is taking forever, as I waited three weeks for the shop to open (they had to move), then another week while everyone was on vacay for the 4th of July, and the camper keeps getting put off for other cars, so he's had it now 10 days. It's hot Hot HOT here and tempers are on the edge, so I'm taking extra care not to seem frustrated. Sue Crowe |
I broke down and waited a half hour on the phone to talk with a very nice fellow at Air Rite. Basically, the 88113's have a "jounce bump stop" on the inside of the round springy thing, so that if for some reason the spring loses air it won't smash down and get ruined. Both 88113 and 57113 have same weight capabillity (5000# each) and same mounting stuff, and both would work on the toyhouses. No difference in the ride, sway, bottoming out, or "squat." He did say that if you have a broken air line and the 57113 spring gets destroyed, there is a lifetime guarantee and the company would replace it.

My air bags were old and leaking, so I removed them. My old bags were mounted in front of the axle between the leaf and frame. I'm not sure this is SOP. I'm thinking of installing air lift bags and have read the install instructions. For anyone who DIY'ed the project, 2 questions. How hard is it to remove the u-bolts holding the axle to the leaf springs? Do you need a 90 degree drill to secure the upper bracket to the frame? Otherwise, if you paid someone to do the install, how much did they charge ( not for the equipment, just the labor)? We had one with a slow leak, but it turn out to be the Schrader valve, which was easy to replace. They are a big improvement. |
