Seeking Gran Sport or Sandtana
Anyone have a line on a structurally and mechanically sound Gran Sport or Sandtana available in the Southwest? Am ready to replace mine. (Photo of mine in better days for attention.) Looking for one in reasonably restorable condition. Not looking for a completely redone (or transferred to a Taco chassis) cherried-out $20,000 to $30,000 one. Don't want a gutted-out box. |

开云体育‘Violet’ ? ?is 21’ ?1986 and has 76,000miles. Inside is original and and in truly excellent condition. Bed over cab, fold out double and 2 Captain chairs. 4 burner stove, double sink etc. The floor is only thing thats been changed and it’s laminate. We bought it for local camping but haven’t been able to use it. We're hoping to get 18,000 but will look favorably at any offer THANKYOU? I'm specifically seeking a tilt-top Gran Sport or Sandtana. Could we please not hijack this thread with offers and discussions of other makes, no matter how nice they are. (That IS a nice-looking Sunrader, Helen.) I am very seriously searching and have about six weeks open right now in which I could be free to go look if a promising one shows up in the Southwest. There weren't that many made. I read somewhere 20 years ago that only 1,600 Sandtanas were made between 1982 and 1985. Am sure far far fewer Gran Sports were assembled during its run,? '84-'85. |
No. Sandtanas were made from '82-'85 and came with foolies. I think the approximately one dozen built on 4x4 chassis had a full floater, but am not sure. The Gran Sports were made in '84-'85 and so also had foolies. The total vehicle weight on these is less than 3,500 lbs. Quite a few owners, myself included, went with unbolted outside rears to take off the extra stress that an outside wheel and tire put on the axle.? I read 20 years ago that only 1,600 Sandtanas were ever made. About eight per week. Not many of those are still on the road. |
FYI the Sandtana I had did not have foolies, nor do I think it ever did before I got it. Some of the paperwork that came with the RV even showed pics of the Sandtana with single rear tires. On Thu, Feb 1, 2024 at 9:38?AM ken winston caine <ken.winston.caine@...> wrote:

For a long time I have been musing about whether the tilt-top portion on these could be reversed front-to-back. ?It would seem much more advantageous to have the tallest ”ceiling” be at the front where the kitchen and bath is, rather than over the rear dinettte where you can only sit rather than stand. . . ? Just sayin’. . . ?Bandit pop-tops and Odyssey Starlight side tilt-tops have an even height when opened?front to back. ? |
Well, on mine the cheap hinges were screwed into small pieces of wood that rotted out, so I just foamed and glued the top down. (sides were trashed as well). Any hokey thing you do to reverse it can't be worst than stock! Just don't drive it that way. On Sat, Feb 3, 2024 at 10:34?AM Tika via <tika_ee=[email protected]> wrote:

Am at my southwestern New Mexico property and my Sandtana is about 330 mikes away at my northern New Mexico property so I can't measure this for certainty. But am pretty sure that with top tilted up you have at least 6'6" floor to ceiling clearance when standing at the stove and sink, more than enough for most people. I do have to lean slightly forward when standing inside with the top down. But only slightly, and I'm 5'10".
