22RE lost water,antifreeze

my 87 Seabreeze started to overheat immediately recently. What could cause it to lose water and antfreeze??

that depends on where the fluid is coming from. could be a hose, a hole in radiator, or even a blown head gasket.

Another possibility (if you're super unlucky and/or neglectful) is the timing chain on the 22RE
engine will stretch, rattle, and chew threw the front of the block into the water jacket.
?
Usually this catastrophic failure occurs at very high miles (150k+) and only after the
owner has spent months ignoring the horrible noise the chain makes as it slaps around
inside the timing cover.
?
Otherwise, start with the basics. Have a mechanic pressure-test the system and see where the
coolant comes out. If there are no visible leaks, then something like a blown head gasket is
the most likely scenario.
?
Good luck,
?

The chain is fine. I had it checked before. I'm hoping it's a hose that's leaking. It might be the original hoses from 87.The oil is fine and it only has 55K miles so I think the head gasket is fine. It idles nicely and I only drove it maybe 6 miles altogether. Thanks for your response.

If it's a hose, you only need look under the motor while it's running. If you see coolant dripping or pouring out, it's most likely a hose or radiator leak. If you don't see coolant, check your exhaust pipe, if you see lots?of water, you have an engine leak. Pop the radiator cap, when coolant. Is oil floating on top. If so, you have an engine leak. Coolant issues are pretty straight forward to diagnose. Good luck, I hope it's a hose or radiator leak which is infinitely easier to remedy than an engine leak.

It looks like the plasiic petcock is bad. It's on the bottom of radiator by the bottom hose.

That's the best news you can have. Your fix should be cheap and easy. Good for you

Glad you found your issue. ?For anybody else following this, it's worth knowing that there is a small hose underneath the 22r(e) engine that sometimes gets overlooked.?

I read about that hose when I first joined the group about 10 years ago. I bought one just in case I ever need it on the road.

It seems like I did the same thing Dan. I wonder if I can find it now hahaha!

I drove my 1982 22R around losing water for over a year, because water loss could not be diagnosed. The radiator pressure test was great.? ?Finally a Toyota engine repair mechanic? saw fine air bubbles spraying into the radiator cap opening.??

?The cause was the water inlets in the cylinder head got eroded away bigger cavities so the head gasket did not have enough metal surface to seal against.? I had to get a new (remachined) cylinder head and that ended the water loss and overheating problem. But I still went camping on weekend trips by stopping to add more fluid as needed.??

There is supposed to be anti-corrosive compounds in the special antifreeze? that? these
trucks are supposed to use but I cannot say what the special antifreeze is that we are supposed to use. The same thing happened to me with a John Deere tractor ...... ( used the wrong antifreeze ) and it corroded badly inside causing leaks.? ?Does someone know what the spec is for Toyota 22RE? antifreeze ?? ? I think it is red color? ? ?? ? ?I guess the original owners manual would tell us or a Toyota dealer. .....? ?Maybe an auto parts store has info on the different antifreeze available ?

Although Paul is the expert I would like to point out that Toyota red wasn't developed until 1999. Engines and radiators used different alloys. I was told at a dealership by an old timer Toyota mechanic that it was not a requirement to use the red stuff for our older vehicles.

I was in Walmart last night and noticed that Prestone has some high end concentrated antifreeze for $17 a gallon that is guaranteed for all models of all cars.? ?Then for lesser prices ( $14) Prestone has some mfg specific antifreezes? (The Toyota one was red ) that have lower miles and duration guarantees.? ?I'd say the technology must have come a long way in the last 30 or 40 years and I feel better about having green antifreeze in my 1985 model engine.?

Those of us who were alive and buying new Toyotas in the
late 1980’s and early 1990’s know the factory fill was Toyota Red:

It was a unique antifreeze back then because it had no radiator
clogging silicates like Prestone Green.

Paul Cherubini

So that begs the question: which antifreeze is best for a V6 (1992 or 1993)? Stick with the old Toyota red, or go to something new? And if your camper doesn't have new/red, should it just be emptied instead of flushed, to replace it? Sorry, hijacking the thread!
Sue

Given the number of and speed with which lawyers like to file law suits these days I think a big company like Prestone would have iron clad tecnology to back up their claims as to compatible for "all mfgrs? and all models"? regarding their premium antifreeze product.? ?Maybe Prestone has a tech support dept that can discuss why their product is different and better than products in the past and ok for use in specific model vehicles.

Thumbs up Paul. I’ve missed your regular presence here!
