Dick.

Your theory sounds right to me. Install a trans
cooler before you leave and don't let the trans
kick in and out of OD. Shift down for hills and
run it in 3rd (not over 55 mph).

Keep us posted. I'm thinking about towing a Festiva
(1800 lbs) soon.

This is our second Motor Home, our previous was a Class A, then and now, we simply put the refer on at the beginning of summer on "gas" and leave it on all the time.? After many experiences with hot/cold etc. we found this to work the best for us.? Oh yes, we do level the unit in the driveway, and leveling is the number one action as we pull into a camp site, as well.? -=dr=-

Hi Jacka, I'm gonna have to differ with ya, sorry. The 2 way refer is
designed to operate on propane or 110 volt, the 3 ways are made for
propane, 110 volt, and 12 volt. Like you said the 12volt is not very
effecient and a battery eater if the engine is shut off. They were
designed to cool down on either gas or 110 then when traveling the 12
volt was supposed to help maintain the temp until you were able to
plug back in or light the gas, it would help as long as you didn't
open the door too many times. Most people run on propane while
traveling then 110 volt while parked where you have 110 v access.
Theres some safety factors associated with running the propane while
driving but thats for the operator to decide :)

NO! to Trim-Line

Dick Rettke

开云体育

We purchased a Trim Line awning and screen room to use with our 17 footer.? I DO NOT RECOMMEND? this product.? The poles that hold up the awing do not hold the awning up if it is cold or hot!!? There are holes in the the awning itself, from rolling it up one time, this is nuts, and the main part on the screen room has a tear in the corner of the canvas after having it up for three days.
Thank goodness we bought it from "Campers World" and they say as long as we have the receipt they will take it back.? Anyone have suggestions on what to buy that works?? -=dr=-

The camp ground is very neat and clean, electric only, with a dump station, roomy sites for a private set up.? $11 dollars per night, and you get a $5 plan at the casino, so the cost if you come out even on the $5 is six a night.? -=dr=-

Hi Group,
Just wanted to let you guys know that we just got back from a one
week road trip.
We left Minneapolis last Saturday and headed to Green Bay,WI. Headed
north to door county, although the weather was wet, it was very
senic. The campgrounds were not that full. We had electric that night
and found it quite some time before the fridge cooled down on
electric.Is this normal?
Hit the upper pinnesula of Michigan driving on the Lake Michigan
side, very pretty. Crossed over into the lower part of the state and
drove down the West side then took the USS Badger across Lake
Michigan back to Wisconsin.
The weather the whole trip was rather cold and rainy. Furnace on each
night, but no need for A/C the whole trip.
Our little home performed with out a hitch, except, with all of the
rain, I'm still trying to find a leak in the roof that filled up the
cabover bed light with water, even after sealing the roof last
spring. I'll be up on the roof tomorrow tyring to find that leak!
Travel on!!

Pat

I added a fuel tank opposite side and it had an internal fuel pump so I have it connected to the vent of the original tank and when the needle gets low I just throw the switch and watch the needle go back up. The fill spout fit right next to the original inside the locked door.-- works great and more than doubled the range. original 13 and the additional 15.? pretty good huh !!!!!!!

I recently bought a 1989 Odyssey.? It is a great little camper but the
range is really limited.? Anyone know of a way to increase the fuel capacity?

I know it would add additional weight, but range is more of a concern
traveling in Arizona and around the west.

Leave me tell you this screen replacement is a major project.? The bottom line is "forget it"...First of all these screens in the RBR box are permanently mounted, there is nothing to take out, one must replace the material right to the window? - wow! what a mess.? You guessed it, we are

Nolan,
Dick's message in responce to your question about new screens is
very good. I will add two things. Be careful when taking the screen
out of the window. watch out that the black clips don't break or get
lost. Secondly if I was going to replace the screen material I would
be sure to buy the type that blocks tiny bugs not just flies and
mosquitoes. The no-see-ums and nats can get through the reqular stuf.
I guess because the electric lights are close to the windows tons of
bugs big and tiny gather on the screens.

Subject: [toyota-campers] E-Z Ryder--stuff we had to fix
?
>From my last post you know how we acquired our new `86 E-Z
Ryder. The seller told us of some of the problems, but some
were surprises.

I. The problems we knew:

1) Cab A/C not working.
The freon was all gone, so we went to an air conditioning shop
right away and spent $220 having it recharged. The shop owner
was very knowledgeable, and suggested that for about the same
cost of new R-12 freon, he could change it over to the newer type
of freon which is less expensive to refill, (although it doesn't
keep quite as cold they say). Because he couldn't find the leak,
he put some dye in the system which shows up under ultraviolet
light after a couple of days, wherever it is leaking. Sure enough
the freon didn't last more than part of the way down from Oregon,
so we'll take it to someone here in L.A. to hopefully find the
leak. I'm glad I didn't fill it with the expensive stuff.

2) Outside fiberglass and pinstriping poor (because the coach
has sat outside in the desert near Palm Springs for most of its
life).
We will be taking it to some RV shops for estimates on outside
detailing and restriping. One place recommended
clearcoating(?).

3) Frame around door window partly missing.
We bought a new frame and replaced it ourselves using fresh
putty tape.

4) Cassette player not working.
We took out the old one and have decided to buy a new
CD/cassette player to put in.

5) Freshwater tank empty & not clean
We filled it, added bleach to disinfect it, pumped it through all
the lines, then drained it, and refilled it again with some more
bleach.

6) Deep-cycle RV battery missing.
We bought a new one at a big chain store and installed it
ourselves.

II. Things we didn't know about, and the seller didn't know
about either:

1) 12-volt system not working at all (even with the new RV
battery).
Eventually we learned the ground wires had been worn clear
through by rubbing on the left rear tire.

2) Propane regulator leaking.
The propane tank was empty, and when we filled it we
discovered the regulator was hissing.

3) Vent cover over cab bed cracked, and when it started raining
the bed got damp.

4) Filler door for fresh water tank stuck completely shut.

The above four items were corrected/replaced by an RV shop in
Oregon (rate $40 per hour + parts). He also added a cable TV
hookup.

III. Things we didn't know about (surprises) that still need to
be fixed:

1) The inside was totally covered with fine sandy dust from
being stored outside in a windy climate. We have started
cleaning it, but it will take quite some time more.

2) Furnace blower motor screeches. (Suburban model NT 12
SE with the motor way at the back.)
We bought a new motor from the RV shop ($75), but he was
ready to close up and didn't have time to install it. He said it
was easy enough to do ourselves, but that's not quite true. I
tried, but after a while I could see that just getting the furnace
out, with the propane disconnected and other tight space
restrictions, looks like about a 2-hour job. We will just have to
find another shop to get the new motor put in.

3) The toilet flap valve at the bottom doesn't automatically
retract -- missing a spring or something.
We will have to find the right part and have it fixed.

4) Insulated drapes falling down.
The drapes are heavier than normal, and attach with snaps to a
track on the wall above the windows, but the fabric strip on the
drapes that the snaps are sewn onto is all disintegrating, leaving
the snaps attached to the track and the drapes falling on the bed!
I found some more snaps on plastic strips (snap tape) at
Camping World, but I still have to sew them on, or else get new
drapes.

5) The plastic plate around the gas tank filler is cracked and
disintegrated.
We have a new one to be installed.

6) Outside mirrors very discolored and fogged.
We'll be swapping them for the clear ones from our `78
Toyota Musketeer.

The biggest surprise is that the engine miles are higher than the
coach miles (32K and 83K). The owner knew that his sister had
put an new engine in it, when she drove it in Arizona without oil
and it froze (oops!), and he thought it was a rebuilt engine. But
when we asked for more information, he was able to find out
from his brother that it was simply a used 22re engine from a
wrecking yard, with 83K miles. That was a disappointment. So
while the miles on the engine are higher than we thought, for a
Toyota it's still not all that high. I have an appointment next
week for someone to take a look at it and check the valves and
compression, and the condition of the guides. (No rattling
heard.) The good news is that the seller was so concerned
about the fact that it wasn't a rebuilt engine like he had told
us, that he voluntarily took another $500 off the price! So we got
it for only $6000.

Except for the cab A/C, all of the other major systems seem fine:
the transmission shifts just right, the brakes are OK, the tires are
new, the roof A/C is nice and cold, and the fridge works excellent.
I do think however, that if this motorhome had been purchased
by someone who wasn't a 15-year veteran RV owner, they might
have found the high number of minor items needing repair to
have been a bit daunting. But for us, the more we tackle the
fix-up jobs, the more we're growing attached to it, and I do think
we will soon end up with an exceptionally nice rig, good for our
family (me, my husband, and the kids we plan to adopt) for years
to come.

Tika

We purchased a "Trim Line" awning and screen room with side curtains.? These are really made for tent campers, however as long as you get the right size they work fine on the Toys.? The only problem we found is that the poles have a
rubber holder on the inside,
when this warms up in the
sun it has a tendency to let
go.? We have some old poles
and we simply use them at the
same time and have no problem.
The screen room has side curtains
and it gives us a lot of extra living
space.? All in all it works well.

It has an auto transmission.

We're planning a big summer trip....from Ohio to Washington State.

Anyone want to meet anywhere? Or have any good places to visit?

I'd appreciate any input.

You can remove the screen frame usually by lifting up on it and
pulling out the bottom, it should have some plastic anti-rattle clips
on it, couple on top and bottom. Go to the hardware store and buy
some new screen material, and the round piping that goes around the
frame and holds the screen in, you'll have to determine what size
piping you need by the width of the slot in the frame, and you might
want to get the installation tool also, just a few bucks, its a
handle with a couple rollers on it. Lay the screen material over the
frame and start in one corner and start pushing the piping into the
groove as you work your way around the frame, keeping it snug and
wrinkle free. After you get it done use a razor blade and carefully
trim the extra screen material off and your done. Good luck, its
fairly easy and also cheap for the materials.

To all of my friends, I do not usually forward messages,
but
this is from my good friend Pearlas Sanborn and she really
is
an attorney. If she says that this will work - it WILL
work. After all, what have you got to lose?

SORRY EVERYBODY.....JUST HAD TO TAKE THE CHANCE!!!
I'm an attorney, and I know the law. This thing is for
real.
Rest assured AOL and Intel will follow through with their
promises for fear of facing a multimillion dollar class
action suit similar to the one filed by PepsiCo against
General
Electric not too long ago.

We're not going to help them out with their e-mail beta
test
without getting a little something for our time. My
brother's
girlfriend got in on this a few months ago. When I went to
visit him for the Baylor/UT game.

She showed me her check. It was for the sum of $4,324.44
and
was stamped "Paid In Full". Like I said before, I know
the
law, and this is for real.

Intel and AOL are now discussing a merger which would make
them the largest Internet company and in an effort make
sure
that
AOL remains the most widely used program, Intel and AOL are
running an e-mail beta test.

When you forward this e-mail to friends, Intel can and will
track it (if you are a Microsoft Windows user) for a two
week
time period.

For every person that you forward this e-mail to, Microsoft
will pay you $203.15.

For every person that you sent it to that forwards it on,
Microsoft will pay you $156.29.

And for every third person that receives it, you will be
paid
$17.65. Within two weeks, Intel will contact you for your
address and then send you a check.
I thought this was a scam myself, but a friend of my good
friend's Aunt Patricia, who works at Intel, actually got a
check of $4,543.23 by forwarding this e-mail.

Try it, what have you got to lose????

Im up here in Portland Oregon. Arco is still the cheapest gas, its $1.49.
I hated to here how much gas is in California ($1.80 to $1.90). I leave
next week for a trip. First to Los Angeles, than to Las Vegas. My 1984 21
or 22 foot Sunrader is getting 16 mpg around town (22r 4 speed 97,000
miles). I figure 1200 miles each way. Lets see total miles say.......2400
divided by 18 mpg on the highway average gas price $1.85 = $246.00.
still not to bad.Even when gas was $1.20 it would cost $159.00. The gas
company will be ripping me off $87.00!!!!!!!!!!!! on this trip.
Take care all,
Todd

Thank you all for the floor plan info. Very interesting! Hope to go
out an
look at a few this weekend!

Just curious how the gas prices are doing in different regions of
the
country...I'm in Los Angeles and unleaded gas is up to $1.80 -
$1.90. What
about the other parts of the country?

Also, I assume that the Dolphin takes unleaded...or does it require
the
premium grade?

Re: Timing chains 22 and 22re.

I have 65k on 22re and my guy just looked at the guides and said they are
ok. -=dr=-

Subject: [toyota-campers] Timing chains 22 and 22re.

Pre 1983 4cyl engines had double row timing
chains and are bullet proof. V-6s use belts.

83 up had single row chains. The 22re has
a single row chain with plastic chain guides.

At around 60k the chain begins to stretch and
rattle against the guides. This is what you
hear on start up. It is the begining of guide
failure. The more miles with chain rattle, the
more wear on the guides. Eventually, guide wears,
the chain sharpens and cuts away the timing cover,
dumping coolant into the oil pan.

As the guide fails, pieces will break off and drop
into the oil pan (good luck). (On rare occasions
it will get into the gears and cause catastrophic
engine failure (bad luck). The 20 thru 22re are
"interference" engines. A chain failure will cause
major engine damage. But It's the plastic guides
that go first.

Back to the rattle: It sounds kind of like a deisel
running , then disappears almost instantly on
start up as the oil flows and the chain tension is
taken up. The longer the rattle period, the worse
shape the chain is in (stretched). A good one (new)
will make no noise at all.

It can be hard to tell what you're hearing here, but
as the engine is an OHC type, there is no lifter
or push rod noise to be heard. That said, the engines
are old and clunkie OHC designs, and do make some noise.

The owners manual says replace at 60k? Drivers
of the 22-22re on other lists say 100k? A survey
of failures on the 4x4 list showed guide failure
at 100-150k.

The fix is extensive. The pan is loosened, the
head and timing cover, (and all their attached
goodies) must be removed to get at the chain and
guides. Some shops have changed them without
removing the head by "fishing" the new chain on,
however, oil leaks can occur using this method.

The parts that are usually replaced are: sprockets,
guides and chains. The guides are usually replaced
with all steel, after market parts such as those
sold by DOA.

This job can be done by a "do It your self" type
if they are good. Toyota quoted one list member
$1,300, and that's for plastic guides. I have not
checked shop prices.

You can check the guides and chain slack by
removing the valve cover and looking down the chain
cover with a flashlight. This would also make a good
pre-purchase check for your mechanic if you are doubt
when buying a used machine.

Re: another tri[

Tom: I had a series of leaks under our unit. I did have the front valve
cover gasket replaced along with the oil pan gasket. That seemed to stop
all the leaking EXCEPT! Now I notice one more leak [red colored] under the
unit. I as yet do not know the location . . . do you know is there a "pan
gasket" for the tranny? I do not do the work myself, however, maybe I have
the same thing you describe? Is this work that can only be done by a
transmission dealer? Let me know -=dr=-

Me and my friend Scotty just got back from a nice trip out to the
desert. We left Sunday morning and drove to Anzaberego. I had never
been there before. Alot of the cactus's were still in bloom..It
wasn't too hot yet..so it was just a nice all around trip there. We
spent the night there and drove on Monday morning to Julian. I had
never been there either.. A nice little town.. it is really a nice
time to be traveling. The wild flowers are blooming still all over
the road sides.. We drove from there to San Diego. Where we stayed
boon docking until Wednesday. It was a nice trip. Scotty took his
19ft Itasca, while I took my 21ft Rogue. It was the 2nd trip I have
taken with the Rogue. It had a virbration noise between 55 and 60.
While on the trip the rear tranny seal started to leak some. SO when
I got home I pulled out the drive shaft and found the Slip Yoke (the
part of the drive shaft that slides into the transmission) was worn
on one side. I went to North Hollywood Toyota and bought a new one.
THey told me that the reason it wore out is that the bushing in the
rear of the transmission needs to be replaced. I remember I think
Dale advising about the bushing wearing out and then wearing out the
whole transmission. Today I am pulling off the tailshaft of the
transmission and replacing the bushing, the seal, the yoke on the
driveshaft and 2 universal joints. I think the whole deal will cost
me less then $200.00. Mainly so cheap because I am doing all the work
myself. None of it has been hard, I think anyone could do it.
Otherwize I think the motorhome ran great. and got 16-17 mpg. which
to me is great for something of its size. I will let all know how it
turned out after I get it all back together. It is interesting and
sometimes frustrating going through a vehicle and repairing every
last thing that either has gone bad from sitting or from lack of
maintance. I Don't know if this is caused by anothing but that it is
really heavy and maybe something is poorly designed. but I love my
Toyota, don't get me wrong, but I don't think anything is perfect..
have a great day all..TOmmy
