Dick, I don't know how much good a tach will do you with an automatic.
Unless you do alot of manual shifting in mountains. My camper had a
tach when I bought it, but it doesn't effect the how hard I drive my
camper. I rarely rap out my little 22R-E with a 5 speed. I like to
take it easier as much as I can. When I am going through mountains I
don't need a tach to tell me when to shift, you usually know. I just
use it more for curiousity. Waiting for spring...Nate

Mike, somebody a while back was mentioning they had just purchased a
mini-cruiser. I wonder if it has the same box as yours, just on a

Thanks Jack, I,ve been very pleased with the group and activity of the
group. We are up to 70 members and close to 500 posts in less than
two months. Keep me posted about what you tach going 55-60mpg. I'm
trying to remember what mine tach at, I think it is around 2500 rpm,
not positive I might check this weekend if it's not to cold out.

I think that we would all be curious how we each came to purchase our
Toyota Campers. I come from a family of toyota camper owners. I
owned a 8ft. truck camper which I put onto the back of my 97 F-150,
this outfit made several trips in 3 years. It went from Maine to
California and alot of places in between.

Last spring, even though I wasn't really looking, I saw a ad for a 86
escaper in great shape with a 5 speed. I went and checked it out and
feel in love. The biggest factor in buying it was that it was not the
commone automatic, but a 5 speed. It was loaded and a big step up
from my basic truck camper. I bought it at Paul Sherry's RV in
Picqua, Ohio last May. I have put around 10 thousand miles on it and
have many more trips planned.

I encourage everybody to share their story of how they got the toyota!

Yes, the axle problems did affect the 1986 model year. I'd suggest
that you go out to your rig and count the lug nuts on the rear. If
there are 5, you have an axle problem. If there are 6, you are OK.

I'd also recommend investing in a Carbon Monoxide detector. If it is
exhaust gas from your furnace that you are smelling, you could have a
problem regardless whether there is enough unburned propane to cause
a fire hazard.

Dick,

I think it is a good idea to have your propane smell checked out. Propane

much more dangerous than natuarl gas.

I believe the axle problems did affect 1986 rigs.

the rear. That is my next project in the prep stage of our Toyota RV

Well we are up to 66 members in about a month and a half. I want to
thank all of you who have participated in the group. The information
and stories we've shared so far have been great! I just want to
encourage everybody, especially those of you who don't post often, to

Dick does your Mini Cruiser have the door behind the rear tires? I
think my grandpa's camper is a Mini Cruiser. His has the rear corner
bathroom, kitchen is back wall couch on one side, small table on the

I would check it out. Make sure all the other places such as stove
burners, overn pilot, water heater areas. Make sure everything else
is in the off position. Does the smell quickly disapate after you
light the furnace? Is the furnace putting out heat? I would give it
a good check and if you are still having the smell take it to the
dealer or a propane dealer to get it checked out. Good Luck, Nate

As you have all those Toyota based machines in your
family, I wonder if you would gather some info for
the list.

Has any one had a failure on an auto trans?

What about timing chains? Do you change them
at 70k, Or? How many miles on the chains now?

How about clutchs and manual Trans, any problems?
do you change trans fluid?

How many miles on your family's Toyotas and what
repairs have had to be done over the years?

Well, I'm just about packed and leave tomorrow
for Orlando (business) then the Suawnee River
(pleasure). I hope when I return winter is gone
here in Ann Arbor, Mi, but I doubt it. :0)
I'll be gone 2-3 weeks.

I should have lots of "Toyota Tales" to tell the

You could have a dangerous situation here. You should not
get a gas odor from the furnace.

If this happens, other then the first of season start up,
you may want to try and find the leak by using dish
washing soap, a little water and small paint or basting
brush.

Check the line and fittings, from the tank to
the furnace by brushing on the soapy water and looking
for bubbles. This is how the Gas Company finds leaks.

Yeh I am a wimp! I just use it when it rains enough to put the

campfire

out. I prefer to sit around the camp fire, but it is nice to have

the

flexibility. I started out as a tent camper for several years, so I
appreciate the sound of rain hitting the roof of the camper as I'm

drinking

hot cider and watching tv. Instead of sitting in a tent hoping it

doesn't

start to drip. I may be a wimp, but I put in my time roughing it .

Depends on how much the right foot twiches.
Torque moves a MH, HP keeps it moving. Its a balance better mpg does
not usually mean better hill climbing.
Pick your crusing speed and select a proper set of cams, headers, and
exhaust system you can improve the MPG, but may be down on HP in the
mountains. If your goal in climb that hill with the big boys then you
will lose MPG. The factory makes a balance in the middle.
But the factory engines are built to a price, if you are willing to
spend enough you can have more HP and torque, but its not a simple
bolt on of a new air cleaner and a set of glass pack mufflers. But
requires a flowed intake manifold with a matching set of carefully
ported heads. The block will need an improved oiling system and a
matched set of pistons and rings to harness the increased air/fuel flow.
With the wrong choice you can lose MPG, torque and HP.
The bottom line is only a couple of MPG in either direction and maybe
10mph up simple hills and 5 MPH on the biggies.
The best and cheapest way to get better MPG is to slow down a bit.
