Don't know what years they were made. Mine is a 1981 and has a R.B.R.
18 ft Mini-Cruiser rv on it. It has the Toyota L-deisel 4cyl at 62 HP.
looks like it's all stock. It has roof air and a ref. shower/stool
small bath. Dinnett in back microwave and tv / sink on the pass side,
of course sleeping area over the cab. I have looked on ebay and on-
line rv trader and everyother place I can to find another but came up
with nothing. I wish someone could tell me more about the years
manfactured and things like that

I changes the O2 sensor on my 4 cyl engine, and it was the easiest
job I have done on the truck. I would highly recommend soaking the
bolts in liquid wrench for an hour or so before you attempt to
remove them. Mine came right off. The sensor is located on the
lower portion of the exhaust manifold. Very convenient to get at.

I re-caulked my windows with this new '50 year' silicon caulk on
the advice of another RV'er. If it works I will be 112 years old
before I have to do it again.

As far as I know only the VW and the Toyota
filters have check valves. If your chain or
valves aren't rattling go ahead and make your
trip then put in a Toyota next oil change.

I wonder if they put in the right plugs?
IF you have the 22RE ,the book calls
for NGK BRP5EY or Nippondenso W16EXR-U

Are you thawed out in Wisconsin yet? It sounds like your getting your

Toyota ready for some traveling. Using the cardboard under the unit is a
good idea in locating your drip. Regarding oil filters, no one in my family
of five Toyota camper owners have used a Toyota oil filter and we have never
had any engine problems related to oil and all of our units have around
100,000 miles or more. We all use the cheap Fram or whichever brand is on
sale. I am sure, like Jack says, the Toyota filter has a check valve, which
keeps oil from staying in the filter when the engine is off. It is also true
that campers usually go longer between starts than cars, so this could help.
I use oil additives like (Dura-Lube, Skick 50, Prolong, or Motor-Up) every
30-50k miles. They are designed to protect against cold starts. Have been
very satisfied with these products. I am not an expert, these are just my
opinions.

That is what is great about this site, you can get different thoughts and

advice, and decide what works best for you. If you feel more comfortable
having a Toyota oil filter then it is worth the extra $3. I just want to let
you know that some of us get by with out them.

I know that satelite dish access is possible, but it is prohibitively
expensive and used mainly by businesses. A regular ISP hookup through a

I beleive the secret dealer gasket recall
extended in to the 90s models. There was
a post on another list, last week that covered
a recent free replacement. I will try and
find the post.

DOA engines, Out your way, in LA, builds up
special 22RE engines for RV use. At $2,600
it would be a good deal if you just wanted
to get more power, yet have the reliabilty
of 22RE and keep MO unit you have. Ted,
this would really get you up those hills :0)

DOA also has a lot of info on the timeing
chain failures of the 22REs, and sells kits
to replace the chains and plstic guides that
plague our REs. (BTW I beleive the v6 has an
easy to replace timing belt instead of the
chain as on the 22RE.)

I too have been researching the V-6 units
and here is what I've found so far.

Pros:
The V-6 does not have the timing chain filure
problem of the 22re.

It does have a bit more horsepower.

A v-6 unit should bring a better price at
resale time.

Cons:
It has had head gasket problems. Some are
still being repaired free at the dealers,
but others are not covered. I don't know
which ones are covered. (More research is
needed here).

The HP increase is only about 35 hp over
the 22re and it weighs more.

Now here's the bomb: A list member on another
Toyota list says he was told by DOA motors, one
of the top Toyota performance engine builders
out in California (They sell a hot 22re) that
70% of the V6s need major engine work at around
90,000 miles.

Is this true? I plan to look into it further
before I consider going with a 6 cyl
unit. Perhaps "Consumer Reports" back issues
might shed some light on the reliabilty of
this engine.

Dick (and all new Toyota-camper owners).

There will be new things to fix on your
Toyota each time you use it, and at the
begining of each season. This is normal
,not only with an older unit, but with RVs
costing $100,000 and up.

These are complecated machines when taken
as a whole, but very simple when looked at,
each section at a time. Much of the work can
be easly be done yourself. If you take it to
the shop each time, you learn nothing, and
end up spending a lot of $$ for poor work.

Buy the Chiltons manual for the truck part
and read it over. Open the hood and look
at the parts as shown in the book. This
is a good start. You need to know your
truck as this is what gets you home.

Always carry the book with you. If you
break-down on the road, chances are unless
you are lucky [?] and can get to a Toyota
dealer, the mechanic you find will know little
about your machine, and will need to see the
manual.

The owners manuals for the 85-86 Sunraders
were written by attorneys. They tell you
very little about the cabin. In fact they
bearly even aknowledge the plumbing or
electric systems.

The fuse box for your unit is similar to the
one in your home, except it has fuses and
breakers for both 117 volts ac and 12 volts dc.

Many RVers flip off the breakers when they put
their units away for the winter. Check it out.

A hard learned tip here. Forget the running lights.
I've worked on the light systems on both mine and
my friends unit. What a corroded mess from the Michigan
winters. I had to cut out all the splice blocks and
hard wire. I spent two weeks on the first one. the
second unit I got smart and wired around every light.
Only took a few days that time.

Good luck and have fun. It's far less painful if you
look on all this as a hobby ;0)

Probably if the unit has been setting where leaves could get into the vent
you may have to drop the fan motor (easy to do - lower right hand side
w/three screws) and clean out the leaf deposit. You can tell it is leaves
by the rattle in the blower area. Once removed the air passages are no
longer blocked.

Anyway it worked on the 85 Huntsman.

Now, I am told that the breaker keeps going off on the one section of the
electrical system. It is the area for the bathroom, and the lights over
the cab bed. Also I have noticed that the running lights on the front of
the unit did not light up as well. Anyone have any idea on how to start

Now I know there was a posting some time ago about not getting air out of
the vents . . . this is a problem I seem to have as well. I checked the
leaver for in-out air and that moves however it will still not le the air
come out of the vents. The blower seems to be loud as though it is

working

but still no air? Any ideas on this one folks?
